RAM power consumption

About 2 months ago I installed more ram in my fathers old machine (went from 2x 256mb and added 2x 1024mb, so 4 sticks in total, ddr cl2.5 333mhz as i recall). All was well for a month or so, but then it decided to not power up one day. We opened it up didn't change anything out, just made sure the power connectors were fine and it spontaneously powered up again. It was then fine for a few weeks before doing the same, except after jiggery pokery it wouldn’t turn on at all now. I then swapped out the psu for mine and it works fine.

My question is did the ram over rate the psu and cause it to die? I remember reading somewhere that someone said their low power machine could take 1gb of ram but not 2. Is it that much of a concern when upgrading or was it just a fluke and the psu died of natural causes?

A stick of ram doesn't use much power, if it did cause the psu to die it would have gone soon anyway.

PSUs get weaker over time, and cheap ones tend to fail after a lot of use.

Makes sense, I think he's had his for about 6 years now (i'm not sure of the quality of it but its not a brand I've ever heard of), and its been on for a good chunk of those 6 years. Thanks :D
