does ram need to be on the Motherboard Manufacturer's QVL list for it to work ok

as ive now had two different Sets of ram for my GigaByte Z97-D3H

1 Team Group Set (gave me a BSOD)
2 Corsair LPX which seems to be making the PC randomly freeze

the team doesnt seem listed on the list but the Corsair is

ive narrowed the problem to either the Motherboard or the Ram

No not necessarily need, but if it's qualified for that motherboard, you have a much better chance of getting the kit to operate at the specified timings and speed for which it was binned.
