Hey Guys just a quick question.

Thinking about upgrading my Q6600 to an i72700K and i already have 8gb of OCZ DDR3 1333mhz duel channel. Question is, as i will be going for a new cpu and mobo will i be best upgrading my RAM too or will the current stuff do fine. Will be looking to overclock the cpu to around 4.5ghz. Would i be bottlenecking or anything?

Secondly I currently have Corsair H50 watercooler. But i only have the attachments for LG775 sockets and i ditched the 1155s i think. Does anybody know if i can pick up spare attachments anywhere?

Thanks

Chris

actually, the q6600 doesnt care what type of ram it has. The memory controller is in the chipset, and some of the later chipsets for skt775 did support ddr3 (never mind the fact ddr2 didnt run as fast as 1333mhz).

As for the actual upgrading, i guess it depends on what deals are going and how old your ram actually is. The older ddr3 would run at 1.8v-1.9v, which the newer intel cpus (with built in memory controllers) dont really like. The newer stuff runs at 1.65, 1.55, 1.5 and even as low as 1.3v. I cant really see there being any performance issues with what you alreayd have though, just a potential voltage issue.

Good advice. :)

Q6600 works fine with DDR3.

Thanks a lot this is extremely good to know :). I have budgeted for new ram but I guess I will try the older stuff first and the decide an whether to get newer. It is definitely DDR3.

I chose the 2700k Because i heard it was the best bang for buck that is currently available and I also heard that Intel were ditching LGA1366 and Tri Channel set ups? And as for choosing it over the 2600K it comes with BF3 for an extra £20 so since I was planning on buying that anyway financially it makes sense. I am assuming that the 2700k will have the same headroom for overclocking at the 2600k if not a little more?

Thanks a lot for the replies

I would check what voltage it needs before you try it.

Using DDR3 which requires more than around 1.58V isn't recommended with Sandy Bridge and if yours is the old stuff needing around 1.8V you could damage the processor.

If it's low voltage give it a try, if it isn't don't risk it.
