I have a third stick would it be worth dropping to (single channel?) but + 8GB more RAM?

FYI: Intel PCs don't lose dual channel with 3 sticks, but in answer to your question: if you're running out of memory then yes, it would be worth it.

This is a AMD system, I've just taken some 8GB sticks from another system. I was using 4 x 2GB sticks before.

The Intel system was triple channel.

I think you can have issues with 8GB sticks sometimes, depending on the age of the PC.

If you can equalise the channel capacity that would be ideal.

Amd supports flex memory mode as well try it and see.
