ram speed with a 7700k and z170 mb?

ok so I have a z170 board with a 7700k and 8gb 2100 ram,all working ok but just wondering is it worth getting faster ram?

if so what do I get?

Ideally you want 3000mhz or more with a 7700k. There are significant gains to be had by using fast ram with it (depending on the game). At the moment you are potentially holding your system back with slow memory.

I looked at my mb specs and its says:
Support for DDR4 3466(O.C.) /3400(O.C.) /3333(O.C.) /3300(O.C.) /3200(O.C.) /3000(O.C.) /2800(O.C.) /2666(O.C.) /2400(O.C.) /2133 MHz memory modules

I'm assuming if I get some 3000mhz it will just downclock to 2100 then I have to manually oc it in the bios with xmp?

is there any difference to getting 1x8gb vs 2x4gb?

Wouldn't bother to be honest, not with how much memory is at the moment.

Just use xmp. Very easy. Dual channel configuration needs two sticks so 2x 8gb

Would this also be true of the 8700K? Not looking to overclock it initially but the vast array of speeds available are confusing me...

Same idea so yes. The thing is that slow ram is almost as expensive as 3000mhz ram anyway so why hold a system back by opting for slow memory when the price difference is so small?

Cheers, that's what I was thinking but just wasn't sure how high to go.

About the only "positive" aspect of RAM prices being so high now is that it means the price difference between the basic stuff and the flashier versions with RGB LEDs is fairly minimal. Not that that does much to ease the pain of paying £190 for RAM in the first place...
