Ram Speeds?

Hi, the RAM speed depends on any overclocking you intend to do.

The C2D, for example, are excellent processors for increasing the FSB. If you have faster RAM, then you have a little room for overclocking and can get away with keeping the CPU/RAM in sync.

For example, you could by a CPU with an FSB of 1066MHz (effective). The actual clock speed for this is CPU is 266MHz, so this means that you'll need a minimum of PC2-4200 (or DDR2-533). This is because PC2-4200 has a clock speed of 266Mhz (533MHz effective).

So, if you then buy PC-6400 or higher, then unless you have changed the FSB or overclock the RAM, you'll see no benefit.

C2D benefit from increased speeds but not so for the AMD systems. They tend to benefit more with lower latencies.

That said, I'd personally go for DDR2 that has a little headroom anyway. say PC-6400. Then get yourself at least 2GB for XP or push the boat out and get 4gb if your running Vista.

I've written a guide here if it helps...
