Hello,

I've recently built a new machine and made a mistake when buying the components.

I ended up with this RAM:

Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9

When I actually asked for:

Corsair XMS3 6GB (3x2GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C8

I had a spreadsheet with the right numbers on (C8), but OCuk sold me C9 at the C9 price.

I'm not too fussed, but am I going to notice much of a difference in performance?

I'm runnning the following:

P6t Deluxe V2
i7 920
Sapphire 4870x2
Vista 64 bit

I'm really tempted to swop the ram out and get 6GB faster ram, or should I get 6GB faster ram and put it in with this slower ram to make 12GB?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I play mainly Crysis and Far Cry 2. I get excellent FPS (goes to 20ish in really big fight scene (habour scene etc), but most of the time runs happy at 40+, Far Cry 2 never dips below 60fps. Will I notice much of a difference with C8 ram to spend the money in getting what I actually wanted?

In terms of performance, i doubt you'd see any.

However, if you were sent the wrong item (double check your reciept), then for £4 more you can get the slightly faster PC8. Unfortunatly however, they are out of stock at the moment.

If it were me, i'd send it back if the postage cost isnt going to be too much, and you dont mind having not having a PC for a while.

I wouldnt buy the original RAM you wanted and use that with your current RAM. Different timings, not to mention slightly overkill for most!

Also chances are that you could probably reduce the timing on the C9 ram to C8 anyways via the BIOS and it would be fine (tho not guaranteed).

I think with i7's moving from C9 to C8 does provide quite a bit of difference to things such as memory benchmarks, but in real life applications I doubt you'd see a difference.
