RAM upgrade question

system: FX 8350 4.2Ghz 1tb 8gb 1600Mhz AMD R9 270X 2gb ddr5

main board: 78LMT-USB3 Gigabyte AM3 78LMT-USB3 x 1


i recently added another 2gb of 1600mhz ram to make 10gb. it made a difference on games like xcom2.

so today i got a 4gb stick (for £10 second hand) i added it and it now shows my ram speed as 1333, so i am taking it back. i assume it was mis labeled.

but above this the system seems to refuse to recognize all 3 sticks together.

can i only have 2 sticks in at any one time? there are four slots on the main board. like it would detect 10gig but say 4 unavailable. or it if i swapped the ports it would say 12 gig available 2 unavailable????

or is this just coz the 4gig i got today is 1333.??? (it said 1600 so i am taking it back) or can i only have 2 sticks ???

i dont get it !

i took the 4gig stick back today and they were adamant at CEX it was !600 not 1333/ but when i put it in alone with my 8 gig the system went down to 12gb at 1333, when i took the 4gig out and put the 2gig in i am back to 10gb at 1600.

but i still want to know why it would not recognize all 3 sticks at 1333.

can i only have two of the four ports active? i was going to add another 2gb if i see another for £3, and then a 4gb so i have 16gb.
 
If it has four slots you'll be able to use them. The manual should tell you what the permitted memory combinations are.

If you want to check the speed of your mystery stick you should try it on its own.

If your mixing memory you do need to take some care. There's the voltage and timings to consider as well as the basic 1333/1600.

Your description of the issue is confusing as well.

yeh, there were 2 problems , i didnt describe that very well.

i had 8gb 1600 ddr3

i added another 2gb of 1600ddr 3 (for £3) and it worked fine.

so i thought i would add another 4gb (which i got for £10)

at this point the RAM speed went down to 1333 and i still only had 10gb available in windows.



i then tried swapping the ports as it was suggested pre boot by the system, it then had 12gb with 2gb unavailable at 1333.

in the end i took the 4gb stick back to CEX and got my money back today.

but i do want to add more ram as it is cheap 2nd hand at the moment around here.

nb: i dont have the motherboard manual, and when i look online i struggle to find it from the below description which was on the shipping e-mail

If you Google '78LMT-USB3 manual' the first three hits are all links to Gigabyte's website where the manual is available. You'd need to look on the actual board for the revision you need.

You may have just been unlucky with that 4GB stick. I theory what you tried to do should have worked.

If you have a stick of memory that's not working as expected install in on it's own and test it individually.

i will have another look, but that was my problem, i found more than one mainboard and none of them seemed exactly like mine. i am not up to date when it comes to computers , which was why i asked the question.

ideally i wanted to fill the slots with what ever cheap 1600 ddr3 i could find as it is very cheap , even if i just add another 2 2gb sticks at £3 each to give me 14gb in total .
