hi all, i am in need of a ram upgrade. my current setup is 8gb DDR4 using only 1 of the 2 slots available. the speed of the ram is 2400mhz, the ram im looking at is 2x8gb but the speed is 3000mhz. is this ok as an upgrade or do i need to match the speed? im sure this question has been asked a million times but im just unsure.
many thanks in advance :)

So your motherboard only has two memory slots and you won't be using the existing 8GB 2400MHz stick? If so you should be fine.

If you want a detailed answer tell us what components you're using (motherboard, CPU, memory).

Hi,

Is this a laptop or desktop? If it is a laptop and if by any chance it is Ryzen CPU, then only 2 DDR4-2400 will work for you.
If it is a desktop, you can take the new kit at DDR4-3000 and remove the old stick of DDR4-2400. Don't know if you wanna sell it, you need to clarify your intentions.

hi sorry it is a desktop, but only 1 of the 2 slots have ram installed. im just not sure between the 2 speeds. if it will cause any issues etc?

It should be fine, but may run at the lower speed. Keep old stick and try it. You can return if they don't work.

Hi,

You want to get a new kit of 2 modules of the faster DDR4-3000. Take them, install them in the slots, while removing your 2400 old stick and sell it.
