RAM Upgrade

Hi all
A family member has a system about 4 years old built by Dino PC and sold as an overclocked gaming ready machine. One of the RAM modules failed and I am looking for replacements. The problem I have is, the RAM that was fitted and the motherboard manual don't correspond.
According to the manual the board only supports 1600Mhz and 1333Mhz RAM up to a max of 16GB. But the RAM that was fitted is 2400Mhz. I cannot find any DDR3 2400Mhz Ram modules anywhere but I can find DDR3 1600Mhz modules. How could this have worked with the wrong RAM fitted? Or were the 2400Mhz modules only running at 1600Mhz?
I know DDR3 is out dated but he was hoping to keep it running for another while before upgrading the whole system.
Thanks for your assistance.

Gigabyte Z97n-Gaming 5
Corsair Vengance Pro Series 2x8GB DDR3 2400Mhz

Those have a lifetime warranty! Get on to corsair and get the memory replaced, you will have some down time whilst you send it off. It's worth doing as DDR3 RAM, especially the 24000MHz rated stuff, is quite expensive these days.

It was probably running @1600Mhz as ram can run fine at lower speeds, but it could have also been running over the standard top speed of 1600MHz - you can check in the bios what it was running at.

Thanks, I didn't realise that the RAM had a lifetime warranty. I will look into it. After the system fell over the CMOS battery was pulled so I guess the bios settings would have reset.

They probably have been reset but I would still check for any saved profiles in the bios, you never know.

1600MHZ is the fastest speed the CPU's memory controller is rated for, any higher than that is overclocking and therefor not guaranteed.

Thanks. As the system was overclocked the warranty would probably be void. Would the simplest solution be to drop in ...... Linked to these as Overclockers don't have many in stock.
