RAM mhz for AMD 955

would a RAM running at 1600mhz be useless with an amd 955 as this cpu supports up to 1333mhz? ie. should I just buy the 1333mhz bundle? (I am asking cos I found both for the same price, the 1600mhz kit having a CL7 timing-corsair XMS 1600mhz @ CL7) the motherboard used will be an asus crosshair iv.

You should be able to set the memory multiplier to 8x in bios which gives 1600MHz with a 200MHz frequency. This is an OC setting, the default is probably 6.66x. Check the motherboard manual.

andy.

the motherboard does accept 1600mhz(OC) but doesn't the amd 955 offer 'Support for unregistered DIMMs up to PC3 10600 (DDR3-1333MHz) – AM3' (as quoted from amd site)? so wouldn't 1600mhz ram be useless over 1333mhz ram?

You probably would not notice a real world difference, I have not run comparison benchmarks to show a difference. Something to do.

Currently all intel processor memory controllers support DDR3 1066MHz memory with tri channel and amd dual channel support at 1333MHz

Real world there will be no significant difference, slight improvements, maybe a extra frame here, a few tens of a second load time there.

Having said that you should go for the faster kit if they are the same price.

Upping the voltage on the CPUnorthbridge a bit might help get it stable at 1600 if you have issues, but you should be able to run it fine. and if you just cant get it stable, you should more chance of lowering the latencies at 1333.
