Why is ram so confusing?
ive just accidently bought myself an i5.
so i need a board and ram. I was going to go for a z77 gigabyte board and 8gb ram. but im so confused.

Corsair vengeance 8gb dual channel will work or Samsung green,either of those will work fine on z68 and z77 boards

They are 2 sticks of 4gb

in total 132. this happened years ago with a e6600, i got that cheap too.
i was only messing around on ebay. i was thinking about an upgrade but im skint so i wasnt really that bothered.

hi and thanks. can i ask why you recommend a z68 instead of a z77? just wondering.

Only main difference is on-chipset USB3 support.

Basically. Don't get a z77.

It's quite pointless...Even as an upgrade path > you won't need to upgrade from a 2500k for years to come.

Most z68 mobos has USB3 support, it's just on a 3rd party controller; there'll be one/two ports usually.

There's no noticable difference in USB 3 speeds between a z68/z77 board, however it's obvious you have your heart set on a z77, so i'd go

lol. youve bucked the trend. most on here push gigabyte.
i had been looking at all the £100ish gigabyte boards (z68 Z77). so i had narrowed it down a bit to gigabyte. now im spinning.

the z77 have improved power phases,why would you pay good money on outdated boards? its only £20 more to have the latest

Do you want the ability to run two graphics cards in SLI/Crossfire at PCIE x8/x8 speeds? If so, then I would go with a board like this (or the UD3H mentioned by wazza).

However, if you don't plan to SLI/CF then the sub-£100 boards mentioned so far are good options (they run the second card at PCIE x4 speed and usually don't support SLI). I tend to prefer Gigabyte boards mainly due to their well regarded, UK-based RMA service - also they are known to make good quality boards.

As for Z68 vs Z77, there isn't a massive difference between them - the benefits are native USB3 support, native PCIE gen3 support (with an Ivy Bridge CPU). However, considering the small price difference between comparable Z68 and Z77 board I would personally just go for the Z77 version.
