hey guys as title says looking to upgrade memory

current setup

i7 920 o'c @ 4ghz
xms3 ddr3 6gb
x58 rampage 2

think manual says speeds up to 1600mhz and (1800 and 2000 overclocked)

can i just buy memory with a speed of 2000mhz and not overclock the ram?
or am i just better of getting a 1600 set

looking at something like

Corsair Vengeance Gold 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C9 1600MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit (CMZ16GX3M4X1600C9G)

or

Corsair Vengeance RED 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual/Quad Channel Kit (CMZ16GX3M4X2133C11R)

any help much appreciated

X58 is a triple channel format so you need a kit with three sticks to take advantage of this. Four sticks in the same system will mean it runs dual not triple channel.

If I was you on X58 I would not go above 2000mhz RAM for compatibility even this is high on that platform.

hey guys thanks for replys

would 4 sticks really mess this board up or just cause problems or something? read somewhere some guys getting a lot of CTD and blue screens when trying to put in the 4th stick alright.

ok so probably not optimised for 4 but i thought that because this board had 6 slots 4 sticks should not be a problem?

even manual gives populating instructions for 4 sticks

thanks again

It should run on 4 but you do not really get any benefit from it apart from having 16GB as its Tri Channel. Make sure you put them in the right slots check your manual.

hi again,

not bothered about the overclock if i dont have to, manual says board takes 1800(oc) and 2000(oc).

so my question was do i really need to overclock to 2000 when i can just buy 2000 speed ram, is this an issue or something?

Hi, if it was me l would just go for the Corsair Vengeance 12GB (3x4GB) as its X58 Tri Channel its more than enough and save £34 plus you should have no problems running it.

Plus are you going to upgrade soon new build, far better put the money towards that.
