Right guys,

I seem to be having a bit of a weird problem with my Rampage 2 Extreme/i7 920 build.
It doesnt affect the performance in any way, it just really ****es me off having to listen to it.
Basically, it makes a really weird, high pitched beep when idling.
Yet when I open prime95, and put some load on it, the noise disappears..
I have tried to capture it in the following video, but you cannot hear the beep :(.

Anyone have any idea what this is?
It comes on and off when it pleases, but it is driving me mad!!!!!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Nick

Sounds like you have cap squeal (though i couldn't hear it in the vid). Odd that it should be squealing on idle and not load.

Yeah it's more of a squeal I would say..
Will try and get a better video of it tonight, see if I can capture the noise.
But yeah, when any type of load is applied to the system it disappears!
Is cap squeal a bad problem? Is it about to go bang? Lol

capacitor whine is difficult to capture and unfortunatly is not classed by many manufaturers as a fault.
is the mothebroard stable?

are all your voltages looking ok?

Stable as it can be at the moment.
Im having problems with memory.
Im currently using OCZ Reaper HPC PC3-15000 6GB kit.
When I first used the system after it being freshly built, everything was dandy. Win7 installed without fault, everything was cool.
About a month or so ago, I noticed that only 4GB was being reported by Windows and the BIOS, yet CPU-z was still posting 6GB, but in Dual Channel not triple.
I RMA'ed it and got a replacement which sorted that issue.
Now im getting random BSOD's, and memory address errors.
After running memtest86 for 7 hours, 54 faults were recorded. This was on Sunday..
Also prime95 will not run a LArge FFT or blend test without some of the workers stopping within the first few minutes. Eventualy they will all stop.
The only test it will run without fault is the small FFT.
I have since bought some Corsair Dominator RAM and should recieve it today, hopefully it will sort that issue out.
As for voltages.. Whatever I set my DRAM to run at in the bios it never actually changes..
Say I set it to 1.65, I go into HWM Blackbox, its still reporting 1.71.
Not sure if thats what you mean?
The whole thing has been more hassle than its worth so far.
Ive only had it since the start of Jan :(
Throw this out and go back to the E6320 me thinks :P

Im getting the impression that maybe the noise is my 9800GTX?
Ive looked around on the forum, and there is nothing about Motherboards squealing.. Only graphics cards?
Meh, just an idea.
:D

I once had a PSU that gave a high pitched noise, but that was under graphics load, and had to replaced the PSU in the end.

Well, I cannot really pinpoint where the noise is coming from.
Could be a number of things, Mobo, GFX card i'm just guessing its the motherboard as it only stops when i put load on the CPU..
Could it be the CPU?
:(

Could it be the CPU?
:(

Very unlikely. It is usually capacitors that squeal, and most often it is graphics card.
I would suggest trying a different graphics card, preferably very low end. If squeals stop - it is a gfx card, otherwise something else.

Squeals on gfx cards is normal, as far as I can tell, but usually happens under load though.

It most probably is my graphics card as its a bit dated now and has had a hard life..
Currently running a 9800GTX, and I have done for about 2 years.
Never noticed it before mind..
I will try and get hold of a low end card and give it a try, hopefully it disappears as im due an upgrade in that department :p

So.. I have recieved my new memory (this is a different problem btw)
Still getting errors, and it blue screens when I run Prime95, with everything at stock settings.
This is the 3rd different set of memory that I have tried, surely all of them cannot be faulty?
I havent memcheck86'ed it yet, but im expecting it to throw up errors like the rest of the kits I have tried..
Does anyone have any idea what this could be?
Faulty board? Faulty CPU? :(

My first problem was that only 4gb showed up in windows 7 instead of 6.
So sent that back.. found to be faulty under warranty and got a replacement.
The replacement BSOD'd under Prime95 and sometimes randomly.. I still have this sat on my shelf waiting to go back under warranty for a refund. As over 7 and 6 hour periods in memtest86 they threw up 56, 45 errors respectively.
So I bought some Corsair Dominator 3x2GB 1600MHz, and yet again.. under prime95 it BSOD'd, giving me the error PFN_LIST_CORRUPT.
Whats going on?!?!?! :(

Managed to drag this lot up from event viewer, mean anything to anyone?

Right, so ive just tried making another video, but cant for the life of me pick up the noise :(.
Its doing it more than ever and is sooooooo annoying!
How can I test to see if it is cap squeal etc?
Ive been talking to a friend at uni doing a Masters In Computer Systems Engineering, he seems to think that cap squeal is a very bad sign, and that it should be RMA'ed asap!!
Thoughts?

Mines a Corsair HX620W.
Unfortunately I do not have another to test with.. hmm.
The only noise I have noticed coming out of it is a squeaky fan sometimes..

Mine was the coils in the PSU, still need to send for RMA, in the end i went for an Enermax Revolution 85+ 850Watt PSU, and its been ROCK solid...

Mine squealed like a pig, when under load, or high graphics, and when mouse moved in aquamark...

This is different, and more subtle..
Does it when IDLE, and disappears on load, I mean wtff?
I was thinking CPU throttling?
My laptop makes a similar noise when its not plugged in..
As soon as its plugged in the noise goes.
Hmmmmm

Getting that error in Intel Burn Test..
What do I doooooooo?
Everything is at standard settings.
Nothing is overclocked whatsoever..
