Ran my first Marathon! Peoples experiences?

I just did my first Marathon, training has been on and off for the past couple of months and I am certainly not at my fittest. I did manage to get a 3hour 57 minutes in the end. Just wondering for you marathon runners how did you recover over the next days and what is peoples experience of this rather long distance?
 
How do you feel after it? I'm thinking about doing one myself. I'm quite fit, walk and skate a lot but I've not jogged/ran properly in ages. Aching all over I guess?

electrolytes are a god send hopefully your water contained them.
also after you finish you will still be dehydrated even if you think you drunk a lot of fluids
 
It's not that long if you've done an ultra ;)

Compression socks are good for recovery, just rest, take extra protein and don't run for a few days or walk loads. I normally run a slow 5k after 3 days of rest to get things moving again but leave serious training for a couple weeks
 
The Potteries Marathon in 2000 was the hottest ever recorded in Britain at 32c and spectators were falling down.
Around 2,500 entered, only 1500 started and around 700 finished.
I made the mistake at 2 miles of letting a bloke hose me from head to foot with water and by 4.5 miles I could feel my first blister.
At 7miles it was way worse but I kept on.
At 13 miles I watched a runner die of a heart attack and at 15 miles I visited St John who said my feet were unfit to run but I carried on.
At 19 miles St John called me in to their tent where they said I had to stop but I carried on (they must have radio'd my number ahead to look out for me).
At 24 miles they called me over again but I told them I was not removing my shoes and the last 2 miles was mostly down bank.
At 26.2 miles St John had a wheelchair waiting for me and I couldn't walk for a week after that so had to take holiday leave.
When I was taken into the First Aid tent it was like a war scene with many runners suffering from 2nd & 3rd degree burns to their shoulders and arms.

Stay away from the hot marathons unless you're our member First Born who has done the Marathon De Sables and he can offer great advice.

My 6 marathons after that went without incident.
 
Nice one man :) That's a great achievement.

I haven't ran a marathon, but do run long obstacle races and usually end up aching from head to toe and covered in little cuts and bruises at the finish line! Long, hot baths, saunas, a sports massage if possible, and plenty of fluid and carbs sort me out. Basically I binge on all the stuff I avoided while training for the race while doing sod all for a few days! Then a bit of gentle exercise to keep the joints moving before starting training again.

Be dubious, that's what somebody from St John told me but I did hear the cries.
Work it out, 32c for at least 4 hours will have it's effects on the skin.
In 1979 I spent a night in a French Hospital when I suffered from 2nd degree burns to my shoulders just by trying to get on a wind surfer for 3 hours.

Yes I agree, after looking at some pictures 3rd degree burns are rather dubious.

I had a knee injury in my first one which stopped me running at around the 21 mile mark, but I got just about far enough to get the usual after effects. The week after is quite comical, particularly coming down stairs. All marathon runners get it, you'll love it!

that sounds about right for me following my first marathon efforts. As I did a few more recovery was quick and back on the road a few days later.

If I spent even an hour out in the sun* on a day that was like 32C I'd have pretty serious burns so I can believe it (2nd/3rd degree burns might be a little exaggeration dunno) - even anything much over 15 minutes will leave me in quite some discomfort on a properly sunny day i.e. around early July.


* With anything less than SPF50.

32°c is a lovely temp for running ;)
 
Nice job. Anything sub 4 hrs is respectable. You'll be really stiff for a few days. Get lots of sleep, hot baths are good. Ease into exercise gradually again. Swimming would be awesome to aid in recovering faster as it is impact free.
