As above, I thought maybe something was afoot with my new XP build but now I've spotted this thread over at NV News.

Anyone had a similar experience?

Best I can describe is similar to the link, for no apparent reason performance falls through the floor, I'd estimate some 25% of normal speeds. Nothing bar a straight forceware (97.02) reinstall will cure it. Tried defaulting CP controls, makes no difference. Also tried the 96.89s and still get it after a day or two.

Given this card came from oc.uk, it should not have the resistor issue present, although I don't actually know if this was the symptom.

Been running both the card and my CPU at stock the whole time.

Getting frustrating :s

Oops :o

2 x SATA storage
dvd + cdrw burners, etc.

Hmmm nice fresh meat!

Can't see anything obvious there at all, except you got two 'bleeding edge' bits of hardware (and mixed together too!).

Apart from an obvious driver bug what are the power reqs for these new nVidia cards, is that HIPER up to the job?

Little did I know the ATX connector had changed since my 480w Antec Truepower, so the Hiper was a rush buy down town to have the system on its first weekend - I'd have chosen something beefier in hindsight. Although I don't think it is to blame in this instance.

I'm expecting a watt meter to arrive tomorrow, so will be potching around on that to see how much everything draws on load. Can't be anywhere near 580w surely.

It may not be near 580W, but as i understand if the rails on the PSU are naff then you wont be getting the juice you need.

Do you have this info handy, I'm all ma$hed up now dude! :p

re: The Hyper PSU, I'm still not sure about this brand, never owned one but I read a lot. There is a small number of the community who say they are really great, but from what I've read in a few PSU-Roundups there are really not made very well?

Lol, maybe its just a driver issue? (mobo or VGA?)

It's a bit of a 'bermuda-triangle' when you get into situations like this.

What would the effect be of this system not having enough power from the PSU? You would think it wouldn't boot or something simple like that but perhaps you enter a kinda 'twilight-zone' where weird things start to happen.

Apart from the PSU question, in your situation I would try to seperate the two pieces of beta-hardware, like maybe try to test the card in another system (cmon your rich, please tell me you got another spare system knocking about right? :))

Apart from that I would sleep on it and wait till some other peeps who have similar hardware wake up! they may be able to shed more light on your issues

may I ask everyone, what actually is this "resistor issue" I've noticed people mentionning?

There was a recall of GTXs a few days before they were launched, because there was a faulty resistor. Nvidia say they got them all before launch, and Gibbo et al say they were replaced.

My Hiper 580w Type R gave up the ghost withing 24 hours of 8800GTX being in my system.

Now Im not saying that the graphics card fried the PSU but the Hiper's don't have the greatest reputation.

Hiper's are bloody rubbish!! I used to be one of the guys who stood up for them. Until, that is, mine blew up and took my motherboard with it. That was after a year and a bit of use. No warning, just bang and clouds of smoke. I could have sent it back for a replacement but i did'nt. I binned it and bought a Seasonic S12 energy+ 650w instead. The rails on the Hiper are not very good and they certainly will not give you 580w so maybe that is your problem. No way would i trust one with a 8800 and i will never buy one again.

They didn't though, the faulty ones are out there, theres a guy on here got one. :p

Interesting, i have the 580 and i have my 8800gtx arriving soon. However, don't forget you only hear about people who have had trouble with a product.
Normally if a PSU is going to fail it doesn't give you a warning, did you expect it to tell you somehow? :D
There are always units that are going to be faulty, no matter what industry. That's life.

Those affected users on nvnews can't all be on Hipers though.

And say for argument's sake it is the PSU, wouldn't the Forceware drivers be informing me of a lack of power? Much like my old 6800GT did when I tried it on an Enermax 350w.

The system itself is rock stable.

Edit: Hmm here's another thread on the same issue. Hopefully it's just the flakey 97.02s, I'll give the older ones a proper go with Drivercleaner tonight...

Oops, noted. Do you know if it was from OCuk, another retailer, or someone breaking the release date?

Wasn't from here, and the release date wasn't broken, there will be some about its a fact, they only found out 2x days before launch that there was a prob, so it was inevitable that they would not catch them all, mind you there isn't nowhere near the amount of faulty ones out there, than there would have been if they never found there was a prob. :)

I have a 8800 GTS & a Hiper 580w modular.
My 6300 is clocked to 3.3 ghz(memory @ 475) & the card clocks pretty good.
No problems playing Oblivion for hours @ 1920 x 1440 with all settings maxed out.

Got my watt meter today.

Some eye-opening results I tell ya... I know it's not about raw total wattage but it would seem my system (and no doubt most peoples) is barely tickling the PSU!

To recap on my system mentioned above, it's powering an E6600, 2 x 1gb DDR2 @ 800/1600, 8800GTS, 4 x 7200rpm SATA II HDs, 2 x burners, couple fans and usb devices. Nothing overclocked.

Idle at first power on: 245w
Idle at desktop: 221w
Core 0 and 8800 running rthdribl.exe (16x AA / 1280x960): 302w
Core 0 and 8800 running rthdribl.exe + core 1 processing xvid: 320w

I was expecting mid 400s with everything on load, just shows how much wattage requirements get blown out of proportion!

Back to the original post anyway, I've drivercleaned 97.02 and put in the 96.89s for another attempt...
