Random Amazon Firestick question (Audio)

My housemate has her Amazon Firestick plugged into her TV via the HDMI port and I'm trying to hook up some speakers from the TV phono out (red/white phono) however nothing comes out of the speakers attached.

The sound still plays through the regular TV inbuilt speakers however.

I've had a quick look in the Firestick options and can only see options for Dolby digital sound, so I'm assuming this is the problem since its not transmitting simple stereo to the TV?

Anyone have an idea whats wrong/is this possible?

Does it do this with other channels as well as the Firestick?

Maybe some TV's you have to enable sound out of the phono put in the settings before it wills top using the TV speakers?
