Random Black/blank screen when in-game

Long time, no post - so here it goes.

I have the spec in my signature btw - running Win 7 Ultimate x64

When playing certain games eventually my computer will freeze a split-second and then the screen will blank (change to black), while the sound/bgm continues playing in the background.
I have to Ctrl-Alt-Del. ending the game via Task Manager.

Now, this only seems to do it on certain games - but both Battlefield 4 and CoD:Ghosts have done this within 20 minutes of starting playing.

Whereas games like Batman Origins, Bioshock Infinite or Wolf Among Us will run completely fine, evidently never crashing (from the hours I've played).

I'm going to be running memtest on the RAM, and will be unplugging all but my OS HDD to rule out PSU issues.

Also been suggested to try and lower the GFX card memory clock by about 40Mhz.

Not sure updating to Win 8.1 will help.
All drivers are up to date.

Anybody have any ideas themselves what may be causing this?
Any suggestions on what to try, or alternative methods to the aforementioned?

Appreciate anyones help in with this. :)

Your described problem could point to a number of different causes although is quite common with many different graphics cards, many people with the new 290X are having this sort of issue and I seem to remember the 780 at launch had this problem. Still, it's not necessarily your graphics card causing it...

Is your card/CPU overclocked? If so have you tried them at stock?

How old is your PSU and GFX card? The Corsair 620HW is quite an old PSU so it may well be not supplying the correct voltages anymore.

Same goes for your 580, it may have degraded slightly over the years and now requires a bit more voltage to run stable, you could try upping the voltage a notch on that (or reducing the core/mem clock as per your thoughts).

Make sure you are running latest nvidia driver too, as you only seem to be having problems with the newest of new games.

You should be able to use HWmonitor program to check your PSU voltages and compare them to what they should be. MSI afterburner will allow you to increase voltage/reduce clocks on your 580.

Let me know how you get on!
