Hi, couple of days ago I had a strange issue on my pc, I was watching a youtube video and suddenly one screen went black and the other just started flashing all random colours. I rebooted and the same thing happened again within minutes, and now of course I can't make it happen again on camera.
It has just happened again 2 days later but this time it seems to be a single event.
Theres no way its an overheaing issue as it has a custom watercooling loop which is running extremely well, nothing ever gets above 50c. And it isnt leaking, which is the first thing i checked. and also the problem doesnt happen when the system is under any particular amount of stress, it has happened twice on youtube and once on facebook so just egeneral web browsing.

The specs are:

msi z77a g45

core i5 3570k

msi r9 290 reference card

16gb avexir core blue ram

corsair evo 540 250gb ssd

1tb wd carviar black storage drive

rm750 power supply.

custom watercooling loop.

It has been running fine in its current state for months and before that when it was just a cpu watercooling loop and air cooled graphics card it had been running for over a year without issue. All drivers are up to date.

No idea what the cause is but I know it shouldnt be doing it.

just to clarify the monitor that goes black is on the graphics card output wheras the one that flashes all manner of colours is on the integrated graphics output.

dont suppose any of you know a cause?

cheers,

Smithy ;)

I used to have a 7870 that had a black screen issue. I would randomly get a black screen and the sound on my PC would completely cut off when browsing the web or playing games. As far as I could see this was an issue with the brand of card and could not be fixed. I'm not sure if this is the same case since you seem to have had the card a long time now but from my similar experience this was the case.

The second thing I can think of that could be causing this issue is overclocking. Have you overclocked your card at all? If so you could try resetting it back to it's default clock speed.

The third thing I can think of is an actual hardware failure. You could check the capacitors on you GPU and see if they're either bulging at the top or leaking at all. I doubt this is the problem as it doesn't seem like you've had the card too long but it's worth checking.

The only other thing I can think of is maybe a virus? If all your components are good, everything is up to date and nothing is overclocked then that's all I can really think of, unless it is similar to the issue I had which I mentioned at the beginning

I had a quick look online and some people have suggested some things that could help. Here are some links.

If all fails try to think of any new things you've either installed to your PC whether it be software of hardware or even something you've plugged in via USB. If it has only just started chances are something recent could be causing these issues.

Hope this helps.

i'll give it a go cheers,

also the problem seems to have developed into a somethign else. I no longer get the flashy screen but what does happen is the pc will randomly just power off for no apprant reason, then reboot itself after a few seconds. It isnt a crash any more I just hear the power supply click off then it comes back on again.

EDIT: Feel like a moron now but it seems this last issue was a loose 24 pin connector causing intermittent shut downs, remains to be seen if its the case as it is hard to confirm the absense of an intermitent fault.
could a loose 24 pin also cause the original issue of black screen and colourful screen?
