Random black screen / shut downs...HELP!

Hello guys,

For the past two weeks I have been experiencing random black screens followed by a failure to boot, the quick fix for this is to reset the CMOS, although it is inconsistent, and only lasts 15 minutes to 9 hours before the black screen issues re-appear.

What usually happens is either half of the screen starts flickering before it turns completely black, or it just goes completely black, the PC is still on and all the lights inside it are on but there is no output, there's also an light next to the EZ DEBUG LED that indicates GPU failure/error.

I have sent back my graphics card to Overclockers and they responded with 'no faults' , when I received the card back I re built my entire computer in a new case, cleaning out all the dust, re-applying the CPU thermal paste and doing a fresh install of Windows.

It lasted 9 hours before black screening, I tried to reset the CMOS, but it didnt work so I went to sleep, I came back the next day, reset the CMOS, it worked for 2 hours, and I have been repeating this all day.

If anyone has any thoughts on what could be the issue or any questions to help resolve this then I would much greatly appreciate it as this is really painful. I think I have to just RMA everything, but I would rather try fix the problem digitally before going through months of hassle.

Presumably you told them that your motherboard signals a GPU failure? If they don't believe the GPU is faulty did they ask you to RMA your motherboard?

usually these BIOS LED errors only tell you what the motherboard was doing when it crashes so it doesn't always helpfully point to the culprit, especially when the motherboard/CPU is at fault. My money would be on either of these two.

What did OC support advise?

I have two assumptions, the first is the video card problem, the second is the driver problem.

The video card could break or something in it could burn/break.

Drivers may not fit the video card, or you just need to restart them with the CTRL + Shift + Win + B key combination.

Sounds like a GPU error to me, did you tell OCUK that it only occurs after a few hours use?

Try underclock the GPU memory by -500 and the core by -100 and see if it still black screens.

Also check event viewer for nvlddmkm errors after it's black screened.

I take it your using a separate PCIe cable for each 8pin on the card?

What's the actual PSU model?
And have you checked Event Viewer and Reliability History for any possible hints of cause?
