Random black screens when trying to game.

This ones.... VERY odd.

Kit in question:

Aorus Ultra X570
5900X
XFX 6800XT 319 MERC

All was fine to start with.

After a while... games (or anything running/needing an overlay) would cause a black screen that required a reboot. Like the INSTANT it needed proper GPU power (even going into GPU settings so.. it seems anything touching GPU API was enough).

Originally thought it was maybe the card. Tried the card in another rig (A320 + 2300X, it's my "small" spare build) and that works PERFECTLY.

Spotted that the bios I was using on this board, the F33A had been pulled from the download options on the website. Managed to get my bios downgraded to F32 (took a bricked bios and a qflash + USB stick recovery to get there) reinstalled the card, had 1 evenings PERFECT use, no issues in the slightest. Considered it fixed.

Today - back to instant black screen. Still works perfectly in the other rig.

I've tried (back when I thought it was the card) a full windows reinstall on a basic SSD to rule out both the install being bad and some kind of weird PCIe lane conflict.

I... kinda suspect if I reinstall the card I might well get a good evening out of it before this pops back up again.

A 2080ti with bigger power draw/etc is also fine in the above. No issues in the slightest with that card installed.

Anyone got ANY ideas? Tempted to try a full install on an Asus B550 Prime I got while trying to troubleshoot a previous issue and see how that fairs.

It could be the mobo so you could do the install on the spare b550 mobo you have and see if that gives the same issue. if not you found your culprit ;)

Yeah, the B550 will probably prove it just... checking as I thought I'd seen a similar post a good while ago around here with similar.

What PSU do you have? your spare build would have used less peak power too probably - probably isn't it but maybe something to ponder on.

When did it start happening? My RX480 started having random black screens few weeks ago.

I moved one screen to the motherboard gfx ports and when the problem happens the screens on the RX480 go black and the other screen freezes but still showing the picture. Can still hear the game running in the background but otherwise the machine has locked up (can't alt f4 etc.)

At first I thought it might be due to hooking up my 4k TV recently but then I had the same problem without it.

Only ever happens when gaming and some investigation led me to this being a problem with and cards for a while https://www.extremetech.com/extreme...ng-black-screen-driver-issues-on-radeon-cards

It only started happening to me a few weeks ago after a Windows update and I think there was a gfx update as well.

I also found out about a useful Windows app that is in Win10 called windows reliability monitor (been around for ages apparently).

Tried a few things mentioned in that article, like updating the BIOS but still have it happening. Not tried turning off overlay support yet or GPU Accel in Chrome.

Don't know if that's the same problem you are having but it might help?

Cheers all on replies, quoted and answered below :D

Mines NOW all sorted. I did a safe mode DDU driver cleaner run, re-installed newest Radeon drivers, so far, so good *touch wood*.
I dunno if the beta bios was hindering things or if this was just weird drivers. The previous fresh install would have *generally* ruled out weird old driver bits but... who knows... might have been related to something in the crappy bios causing a weird setting in the driver?

Previously the driver options were an old WHQL or a newer none-WHQL, tried both got same. Newest now is a WHQL varified one. DDU in safe mode (the regular didn't help, only tried safe on a whim) + reinstall with the new driver... been fine since, mines fixed + stable for a couple of days now.

Have you tried disabling xmp or any other overclock on your memory?

Heya, this one I'd not tried. Definitely in the "hmmm... could be" options. Had the basic XMP on for these. I'll give that a go with future issues, just to rule it out.

So... weirdly, mine was fixed then went again for one night when I went BACK to my 4K screen (switch it between work and gaming rig). So... there MIGHT be something in 4K that triggers it. Fixed now on my side.

True on the little rig, little power. The test was done with a 750W on a tiny thing that... yeah, even a 300W card isn't going to push. My mains on a 1250W Seasonic X-series though so... it could have been a weird issue with PSU, indd. Fixed now though.
