im at my wits end with my current build (in sig). its started to randomly crash for no reason. sometimes its when i play games, others when watching a movie, sometimes when browsing the internet and the strangest when idle on desktop.

i did initially think it was caused by my GPU, so i updated the drivers but still got the same problem. so could be the hardware, although if it was then it would surely be noticeable.

from the random crash from idle on the desktop i decided to see what processes were running at the time from what little info i could gather. narrowed it down to my antivirus (ESET Smart Security) when it does an hourly check for updates. so i turned that off so that it would only check every boot. most likely a driver conflict somewhere.

the desktop crashes have since stopped, however i have just now got a graphical error when playing cod2.

using ATI catalyst 9.8

i also thought it was my RAM however i ran 12 passes on memtest and all was fine so i think i can rule that out.
got using that debugging tool for windows to view the memory dump file but it doesnt give me any real results. sometimes when reading from an address which doesnt exist so i reindexed it all and that looks fine now.

i cant think of much else except a fresh install, any other ideas can be helpful.

It may be your gpu is on it's way out if your getting graphical problems.

Can you test another card in your system.

i was starting to guess it was my GPU memory after getting that problem on cod2, although i dont think there is any way of testing that.

sadly no second GPU to test with so will prolly buy a 4890, and if the problem persists then i could guess its a problem elsewhere. also means i could use both cards in crossfire :D

think i might have found the cause of the GPU problems. seems as though the fanspeed reverted back to 20%. most likely caused by driver updates not keeping settings.
at 20% was getting some seriously high temps on the card (90C on the MEMIO, and around 75C on the shadercore at idle). turned the fan speed up to 35% to see how it goes and hopefully i caught the problem early before it causes any permanent damage. although i will still be buying the 4890 and using the 4870 as a secondary card or something.

u think u have a hot gpu, if im playing l4d with anti aliasing and full settings with 60% fan speed i often have to turn it up to 100% coz it gets to 104 degrees. thing is i have excellent cooling, coolermater 690 case, 2 fans inputting in cool air at side and front inputting.

Sry to stray away from the question but ye id say its ur gpu overheating but tbh 90 degrees wouldnt really make it do that well in my pov.

HF with your crossfire
