Random Corrupt Files??!! :S

Ok, colour me worried, but I keep getting random balloon tips in Windows XP telling me 'File xxyyzyyz.xxy has become corrupted. Please run chkdsk.exe to fix this problem'. I run chkdsk and it seems to delete some corrupted files, for example, it said my Gmail notifier program's exe was corrupted, so i ran chkdsk and then it was fine, but the gmail program was open all the time and still runs absolutely fine. Then when I reboot, it sometimes runs the "Windows has detected an inconsistency in the file system and is going to run a check" disk check, which then displays a load of 'deleting orphaned files' lines.

Anyway, nothing seems to have stopped working yet, but I'm getting obviously worried as it's not the first time this has happened. I reformatted about 4 months ago because this began to happen, and I don't want to turn my computer on one day and find that it, well, won't. Could it be my Windows installation or is it more likely to be my hard drive? The system drive is a Seagate Barracuda 160GB, so if needs be i can back it all up onto my 300GB media drive and then do whatever needs to be done, if anything can be done?! Anyway, let me know guys, and if this would be more at home in the hard drives forum, feel free to move it, mods! :)

I was a while back, a fellow OcUK boarder (firegod) softmodded my 2800+ to a 3200+, but after several overheat alarms I decided to clock back down until I got some better cooling. SO the short answer is 'no' :) (at least not that i know of?) But it's weird because, like last time, i didn't have any problems for ages, but now it's happening more and more frequently, which makes me think it might not be a hard drive issue, you know? Like Windows catching up with its decaying self...or something..........

Right, I installed that prog, but it's only giving me info on my secondary drive, the 300GB Maxtor. I've looked for a way to make it analyse my primary drive, but can't seem to find any. Am i being a n00b? Here's the screener anyway:

I can try the lower transfer rate. What will that do in terms of performance, tho? I think I did install the nVidia SW Controller, whatever that is. And it was just recently too, like about a week ago (around about the same time this stuff started happening, hmmmm  )

Do you know what it is/if i should get rid of it/how to get rid?

Have you done a virus scan recently?

I have AVG Resident Shield running in the background at all times, so it shouldn't be a virus.

What I suggest first is to change the IDE Controller.

Ok so it's now saying that it's running on Primary, Secondary and Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE whatever that means. My hard drive is SATA, don't know if that makes any difference at all! When i uninstalled it gave me the option to just uninstall the IDE drivers, so i did that. But when I rebooted, the system still tried to run a disk check, as if it knew something was still wrong...

Hahah do OcUK still give their boardies 'mad props' for advertising their own wares?! Lol anyway, the plot thickens: I managed to capture a screenshot of such a 'corrupt file warning' popup balloon as I was re-installing my Sony SonicStage program:

This is typical of the popups that appear sometimes. Any ideas? Does the file it's pointing to say anything about what might be wrong?

Update #2: The "Ok this is starting to REALLY freak me out" Update -

Check out this screenie:

But what if it wasn't successful?! The Registry is like....kinda almost important, right?!

hmm i do but it's being used on my media drive atm.... I'll try it. The whole computer's going weird. First quicktime .mov files lost their association with Quicktime, then Sin wouldn't load, then there was a random .dll that was stopping my SonicStage program from loading, and now the internet's being really picky about which pages load up and which ones don't. For instance, I can type this, but I can't access my google mail or some other sites..... Do you think it could be connected? I'm really starting to freak out now! On the virge of reformatting!
