Hi there,
I'm a bit lost on where to go with my old pc.
I've recently rebuilt it with a new PSU(old one was ticking), CPU and CPU cooler but when installing windows 10 from USB stick I was getting crashes on the transferring files part, one time it got 100% but when the installation tried to complete it crashed again.
I tried different hard drives and even swapped the old CPU back in but it was still happening. It wasn't temps as it was at 26C in the bios.
I left it and went back in the morning and kept it to one ram stick, it all went perfect and I got Windows 10 installed. Once in windows I ran Memtest to 100% on that stick and it showed no errors, I then swapped it out with the matched stick for that pair and that got was fine at 100% too.
It all works fast enough, I transferred loads of data between drives, installed steam/ARK and it had ran Cinebench + 3d Mark fine. Also loaded up the graphics card in MSI Kombustor and it didn't cause a crash.
The problem lies in getting random screen freezes which force me to reboot and it'll run fine until it happens again, usually not under any loads so once was opening a new tab on Chrome.
I've installed 890gx chipset drivers, the radeon one listed for my card and every other thing I can think of that uses a driver.
Adding any of my other 2 sticks of ram causes it to crash on boot with an artifact type line across the top of the screen. - I've concluded these are dead.
I updated the BIOS to the latest 3030 beta one but I've also tried 3027 non beta one which seems to do the same.
It happens with cool n quiet/C1E on and off, last night was set at stock speeds 3.5ghz
I had left Memtest running overnight to give it a proper check and the screen wouldn't come out of standby this morning, pressing the power button it acted as if it had shut down properly but with no display.
So on one hand it feels like a software thing to me but because it's an older board with a newer gen CPU it might just be one of those things and I need to get a 990 series board.
Asus M4A89GTD Pro
AMD FX6300
2 x 2gb generic kingston 1333mhz ram
AMD 7870 XT
Bitfenix Formula 550w
Win 10 pro
I'm not at the computer at the moment so show voltages or BIOS settings.
