Random data corruption

Basically ive had persistent problems with my main hard drive (250 gb WD, now 500gb WD) getting corrupted and loosing all data on it. What happens is that it will either say that no boot drive is present or it will start to load windows + reboot during the loading.

This has happened 4 times since XMAS and each time windows is basically unable to do anything to the drive (install/repair) and i've had to use the WD boot disc to format it. The drive randomly seems to fail the WD drive tests either straight away (saying cable error, using 2 different cables and multiple SATA ports with both HDD's), or it will work perfectly for the entire test.

I thought the HD was borked and got a nice 500gb replacement last week and after 2 days i had EXACTLY the same problem again and had to do a complete reformat + reinstall. To make it even more frustrating the drive has now started crashing randomly while you are using the PC, which never happened before.

Throughout all of these troubles, the IDE drive (which is a 250 gb maxtor), has continued to work perfectly and be a nice backup for when these crashes happen. I have tried two different SATA cables and it hasnt stopped the crashes, so could it be that the SATA controller is just screwed and i need to get a new MB? How hard is it going to be to get an RMA when the problem is intermittent like this?

My rig is:
6600 C2D
ASUS P5w DH delux (going by memory, it has built in wi-fi)
2 gb gskill
(no overclock or any changes from standard since the first crash with the original 250gb drive)

Thanks for any advice

Could be the SATA controller.

Do you find that you are stable when you play games? What are your CPU temps like? What PSU do you have?

Basically the PC can be perfectly stable for days (used to be weeks). The temps are low (36 for CPU load) and 45 for MB full load.

PSU is a 450 Watt Energmax liberty (going by memory). Second one i have had after first popped within 1 d of use

Can you provide full system specs? Esp. graphic card(s).

What 3.3/5/12v readings are you seeing through the mobo software/MB Monitor/ or BIOS?

Voltages are stable and the Gcard is a 1900xt (HIS?) Ice something [was on special for a while in the summer].

Generally if the PC gets to desktop it is nearly 100% stable, but on start up there is literally a 10% chance that it will say insert boot disc and then it may or may not be possible to access/repair that data again.
