Random Frame drops in GTA5 60-30fps

Not quite sure this is the right section but my problem is graphics card related. Im getting very random frame drops on my evga 980 sc in gta-v i have vsync turned on and most the time im 55-60fps (happy with this feels very smooth) however i can just be driving about and it suddenly drops to 30fps for a couple of seconds then goes back up again. Its very noticable when playing and is really destroying the experience. I thought it must be the game so lived with it but recently built my wife a machine to play gtav on and that is locked at 60fps on the same settings and she is running a r9 390 with a 4690k im on a 4790k. Has any one else had this issue? Or even come across it. Now i have played in on the other machine i almost dont want to play it on mine any more, it only seems to be on gtav too.

i would say not enough ram, i too have been running 8gb and been using all of it, upgraded to 16gb today but not tested gta v yet so will let you know.

Well i was possibly thinking ram but then our second machine only has 8gb (of slower ram) and that performs better. I also only seems to have devloped this issue since going to windows 10 thinking about it

Give the Resource Monitor a try - leave it running on a second monitor or in the background. After the frame rate drops, Alt+Tab to it and see what's been eating at it?

With V-Sync turned on, if the frame rate does drop below 60, it will drop down to 30. This is how V-Sync works.

Turn V-Sync off, and enable frame rate limiting in your graphics card drivers. This will have a similar overall effect (you won't be producing 96fps when you can only display 60), but without the sudden drop to 30 when it dips below 60.

And then suffer utterly horrific looking tearing?

Dropping from 60 to 30fps using vsync only occurs if a game doesn't support triple buffering. I don't think I have come across a game in the past 10 years where that is the case.

Just to be sure - op turn off in game vsync (as this may be double buffered), and turn on vysnc and triple buffering in the nvidia control panel.

Me and a few friends have been experiencing this issue.
V-Sync was disabled ingame but it was locking to 30fps.
Alt tabbing to desktop and then back in would resolve it for a while.

We all have relatively well specced PCs (970s/980s) etc.

I would wager a money it's the grass or AA setting.

The top grass setting is a killer.

MSAA is also a killer.

Reduce one or both of these settings and it's highly likely you'll see far better performance.

As already stated It's the vsync turn it off or lower the graphics setting. Your system can't run it at a constant rate so soon as it drops under 50fps it will jump to its next vsync lock which is 30.
I have to his problem with the settings maxed so I just turned off vsync it can go as low as 41 fps but it does run smooth and the tearing isn't too bad.

It's a very demanding game with the settings cranked up

Turn off v-sync in game and use adaptive v-sync in nvidia control panel. That should stop it dropping to 30.

MSAA is a killer in gta v so is grass quality. I personally would use DSR or whatever nvidia call their downsampling and run it at 1440p with FXAA.

Cheers guys will try some of this tonight. Im runnig @1080p so not too demanding for a 980. Will try the nvidia vsync as when i had vsync off the tearing was the worst of any game i have ever seen

That will most likely not help. Adaptive sync is also not great as it creates tearing when you get drops. You need to address the source of the framerate drops, not the vsync implementation.

Honestly, dont go higher than 2xMSAA, and turn down the grass setting if you have it maxed(I'm guessing you do). Sounds silly, but that grass setting at max truly is ridiculously demanding and will regularly cause dramatic dips in performance when driving around, especially in the desert areas.

And yes, even at 1080p with a GTX980. Not kidding.

current settings are, I cannot play around until about 8pm :( but will report back once i have tried it out. Funny thing is 90% of the time its 60fps then get these annoying spikes of 30. Looking at my setting maybe need to tweak down :(

Grass quality is on Ultra,
Nvidia TXAA is on
FXAA on
MSAA X4
Reflection MSAA X8

The highest grass and postfx settings can bring a TitanX to its knees under certain circumstances.

Turn Grass down one notch and MSAA to x2(I dont recommend TXAA either, doesn't really do much). Also turn reflection MSAA off, or at least minimize it. It is barely noticeable unless you're very, very picky or are a serious screenshot taker. It is no wonder you are having performance problems.

I will bet you money this solves your problems.

Yup. Even at 1080p, the ridiculous amount of options Rockstar gave us will cripple any single card solution out there. Which is awesome. They really put a ton of effort into giving us loads of scalability and future-proofing.

Yeah, and turn down reflection MSAA too.
Dunno about having FXAA as well as MSAA, but it shouldn't cause much of a performance hit at least.

Even on a 980Ti, 8xAA and Ultra grass is a no go @1080p if you want constant 60fps.
