Random Freeze Then Powers Off

Hi,

I've had this happen a few times. Before my monitor just went black and the only way to get the screen to come back on was unplug the DVI from the graphics card and plug it back in.

Now what is happening is the computer is randomly freezing then after about 5 seconds it just powers off completely.

Is there any tests or something I should run to see what the problem is?

Is there a microsoft log that will tell me why it froze or something?

Thanks

If you right click on My Computer, select Manage followed by expanding Event Viewer and Windows Logs, you'll get a list of all errors from Critical to just Warnings.

I would expect the logs you would be interested in to be under Application and System.

Ok it just went black there again but never turned off. I tried removing DVI plug and re-attaching but still nothing so I had to manually turn the computer power off.

When I go into the Event Logs the only ones I can see that have exclamation marks are:

Error 16/07/13 09:04:59 EventLog - The previous system shutdown at 09:01:37 on ‎16/‎07/‎2013 was unexpected.

Critical 16/07/13 09:04:54 Kernal-Power - The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Warning 16/07/16 09:04:46 e1dexpress - Intel(R) Ethernet Connection I217-V Network link is disconnected.

Warning 16/07/13 09:05:17 Kernal-PnP - The driver \Driver\WUDFRd failed to load for the device WpdBusEnumRoot\UMB\2&37c186b&0&STORAGE#VOLUME#_??_USBSTOR#DISK&VEN_RIM&PROD_BLACKBERRY_SD&REV_0002#7&18405482&0&7F3E632F61BEFF1C1ACC9EEF69A873F822BA88A8&0#.

Does any of that help or should I be looking at something else?

No I haven't overclocked anything. My temps are fine as far as I am aware I always check in HWMonitor.

Right now I idle at 33-40*C and when I run my graphics card for games it never really goes above 70*C.

When its been crashing I have not been gaming. I have been sitting on desktop, browsing firefox etc.

It just done it again heres the latest log: (again no power off I had to do it)

Error 16/07/13 09:28:20 EventLog - The previous system shutdown at 09:26:39 on ‎16/‎07/‎2013 was unexpected.

Critical 16/07/13 09:28:15 Kernal-Power - The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.

Error 16/07/13 09:29:49 Service Control Manager - A timeout was reached (30000 milliseconds) while waiting for the Windows Error Reporting Service service to connect.

Warning 16/07/13 09:30:17 iaStorA - Reset to device, \Device\RaidPort0, was issued.

Is it simply switching off, not rebooting?

Try this -

Click on the Start button and then on Control Panel.
Click on the System and Security link.
Click on the System link and in the task pane on the left, click the Advanced system settings link.
Locate the Startup and Recovery section near the bottom of the window and click on the Settings button.
In the Startup and Recovery window, locate and uncheck the check box next to Automatically restart.
Click OK in the Startup and Recovery window.
Click OK in the System Properties window.

This may give you a BSOD instead of the shut-down allowing you to troubleshoot further.

Sorry missed your last question... Yes I have a multimeter but how do I test it?

Here is a screenshot:

And sometimes it will turn off itself, but wont turn back on... Sometimes I have to physically hold the power button in to turn it off. Never restarts.

Ok I just turned off the Automatically Restart option you mentioned and just after I submitted it all the computer black screened with "no signal" on monitor. Tried reattaching cables but no luck, had to hold power button in to fix.

No blue screen either.

I went back into the options to make sure they saved, it done it again :S

This really sound like it could be a PSU/mobo issue.

Do you have another PSU to test? Remove all components bar mobo, RAM, CPU & HDD and test that. If it works, you can add the components back in 1 by 1.

Have you updated BIOS? Wouldn't expect this to fix/cause the issue, but it doesn't hurt.

I think I have a spare PSU but I don't know if it will power it as it is very old, it doesn't even have PCI-e parts for the graphics card. What size of PSU would I need to power the specs in my signature, if I removed the graphics card?

It's almost certainly a PSU issue. Look at the voltage for the 3.3v line, it's reading 2v. 5v reading at 3.4v.

Have you got a multimeter to test the voltages with?

Take the g/card out and use the on-board

I did spot that, but obviously forgot to mention it in my post.

I would recommend testing another PSU and look at getting yours RMA'd if covered by warranty. XFX/Seasonic would be a really solid investment.

Do is as soon as you can to avoid damaging hardware. Unlikely, but not impossible.

Yeah I have a multimeter I am reading on the link I was given on testing it but it looks like that could be the problem then if the stats are reading wrong. I did hear some bad feedback on this PSU but stupidly went for it anyway.

If I was to return it for another PSU what is the turn-around time?

Contact customer services or ring them and explain. 5UB is pretty good with the Customer Service and will pick it up pretty quick if you post in the CS Section.

I would think the turn around could be a few days if warranty can be dealt with by OcUK and not Corsair.

Thanks,

So you think based on the HWMonitor post with the voltages that the PSU is easily faulty regardless or whether its causing the problem or not?
