Hey everyone

Been trying to source an issue for the past week or so, With no luck.. So thought id ask for advice...

For the past 2 weeks or so, My gaming pc has been experiencing random freezes...
But only when im chilling....
When im gaming, and under a load.... No freezing... I get the occasional slow down in games, But PC hasnt fully frozen..
Its always when im just chilling on my pc.. Watching youtube, Twitch, or a film on VLC player..

Symtoms:

Screen will suddenly go black, and monitor will turn itself off, Just like its detecting no input..
During this time, I can still hear audio etc for another 5-10 seconds..
Then the audio will freeze, and sound like a BUZZZZZZZZ...
And i have to hold power button on PC to turn it off.. Once i restart PC, its all fine again...
This will happen sometimes a couple times per day.. Some days not at all....

What ive done:

Removed ALL overclocks... CPU, RAM and GPU back to fully stock...
BIOS and Drivers updated.... DDU the display driver for fresh driver install...
(RAM)Memtest64 all night while asleep... No errors...
(CPU)Intel Burn Test all night, On extreme settings...... No errors
(GPU)Furmark and Unigine heaven benchmarks, On highest settings... No errors....
CrystalDiskMark showed OS SSD at 100% health... and game SSD at 98% health.... (I dont know of any SSD stability testers)
Formatted OS SSD and Installed fresh Windows 11....
Checked temps via HWMonitor.. Everything is excellent, temp wise....
Reseated GPU and RAM....
Changed from Chrome to Opera browser.. Just to rule that out...

As i said, Most of the time, its okay.... Can play games with friends all night, But then once im chilling, doing nothing heavy load.. it randomly freezes..

If anyone has got any ideas, I'd be most grateful... I dont like the idea of replacing expensive parts, Just to try and find which is at fault haha..
cheers

Is the PC in question the 1 in your sig?

If so a few things to try

Tried just the 1 monitor instead of 2?
Have you tried removing the GPU and using the IGPU on the processor? (or just leaving it in but plug the monitor to the IGPU)
Check event viewer when this happens to see if there is anything in there apart from the unexpected shut downs (where your forcing the PC to turn off)
Tried another monitor cable and port on the GPU?
Clean OS install on a different drive
Hey, Thanks for you're reply..

Yep i have tried just having 1 monitor plugged in.. Aswell as changed the DisplayPort cable...

Yes that is my pc in my sig, But i have got the KF varient.. No onboard iGPU...
(now updated my sig, To not confuse people)

As for event viewer.. Yep, I get a lot of random junk come up all the time...
I cant remember off the top of my head right now, As im not at my PC, Im on my laptop, But i get random things like "metadata container" and "metadata staging failed"... Quite regularly... I can freshly boot up the PC, and pop event viewer open, to find 10+ events popped up, Since the startup haha..

Lots as WARNINGS, and some as ERRORS....
Even after fresh OS install... This is what prompted me to try a fresh install... I was on windows 10, As i didnt like the layout of 11.. But i went to 11, simple to try and rule out a potential Windows 10 update issue or something.. But Nope...

I havent tried a different drive, As i havent got a spare M.2 available...
As my previous post stated, I'm mainly angling for ideas atm, I dont really have the funds to go out and buy all these replacement parts, with the risk of it not fixing the issue....
But if someone pointed me into the direction of potential SSD fault, Then sure, I can go out and buy a new one :)

cheers

With regards to the SSD, Sometimes people have spare SSDs or HDDs laying around after doing upgrades etc so does not have to be an NVME drive just something else to use to rule out.

When you get a minute could you post the event viewer errors? Just needs to be the 1s that are happening at the time of the crash.

May sound stupid but have you removed fast boot to make sure your PC is doing a full shutdown?

Start > Type control panel > Power Options > Click "Choose what the power buttons do" on the top left > Click "change settings that are currently not available" > Untick " Turn on fast startup" (Recommended)
Unfortunately, i havent got a spare SSD to test this..... But since SSD is the popular choice of this convo.. I will order one and try it out :)

I will have to wait until it freezes again, To be able to give the Event Viewer log...
But just from starting up this morning, I got a BIG list of WARNINGS and ERRORS...
Mostly:

Not that these means anything at all to me haha.

And yes, I disabled FastBoot :)

These errors seem to be related to an Windows update going by this link

And this 1 here also confirms its an issues at Microsoft's end so maybe these are not causing the issues.

When did the lock ups start? anything happen around the time these issues started?
Hmmm... Well it does seam, Out of the blue.. That my issues have started happening....
Im not really sure if it started after a windows update... Not something you tend to keep track of haha...
But it has been fairly recently...

I dont understand though... I had these exact issue when i was running windows 10, and now that im running a fresh install of windows 11, the exact same issues are continued on

Run MSI Kombustor until something freezes or try Media Player Classic HC using hardware decoding and madVR quality upscaling settings which will hit the GPU very hard.
Its obviously the GPU that's bad. "Watching youtube, Twitch, or a film on VLC player.." are all GPU accelerated.
That was my first impression...
But i can game all night, with no crashing...

I was playing Far Cry 6 with a friend on Co-op campaign, for 6-7 hours solid, Not 1 issue...
But then we took a gaming break, and jsut chatted in discord, and my pc crashed....
Booted back up, and loaded the game up again... No issues again for the rest of the night..

I have also done furmark tests, and left Unigine heaven on, All night, while i go to bed, Came back next morning, Perfectly fine and still running..
I also booted from USB, to do Nvidia VRAM test's.. All came back with a PASS...

- But on a side note... I bought a new M.2 SSD and cloned it with Macrium Reflect... Im now running from new SSD... Will see if i get any freezes today :)

Okay.. Froze and restarted again this evening, First time today....

Event Viewer says:

First time today that it has frozen..... Whilst watching a youtube video...

Have you tried doing a clear cmos?

remove the cmos battery, disconnect the mains from the PC and hold down the power button for 30 seconds.

Once done wait 30 mins and put the battery back in and boot without changing anything (may need to change boot order, make notes\pictures of the bios settings just in case)
Yes bud, Ive done that... Aswell as update BIOS to latest..
Reset CMOS, and only change boot order & Enabled XMP for my RAM speeds....

But im always happy to give it another try :)

Okay.. Ive just reset CMOS.
Once battery re-inserted, I went into BIOS, Just changed the Boot order, and enabled XMP II again. So that my RAM runs at its correct speeds and timings...
I did notice though.. That although XMP is set, Memory controller voltage states its meant to be 1.5v, But is set to 1.4v in BIOS, With the AUTO setting.. So i manually set it to 1.5v

See how this goes :)

Will report back when i know more..

Can you show us the CPU-Z SPD screenshot? 1.5v seems like a very high default voltage for 3600.
Thats what the voltage spec is, On the side label of my RAM.. 1.5v...
I knew that trusting AUTO for voltages, is sometimes a hit and miss... Used to be a massive problem years ago with some boards..
But honestly thought they had gotten better... Clearly i was wrong haha...
Manually setting it from 1.4v to 1.5v, has made my PC perfect <3 Not one crash, freeze or stutter, In over 24 hours..

I'm not saying I don't believe you, it is just really high for that speed.

To give you an example: most 3600 kits are 1.35v, I had to look at 4400 to find one that is rated for 1.5v.

I can only imagine that your kit is very old?
Ahh, thats strange.... Im not sure tbh.
Yeah ive had my kit of RAM for quite some time now... Been taken from a few older computers of mine, and put into new builds etc...

Hopefully not for much longer though :) As im in the process of saving for a new motherboard, for DDR5 support, and a i7 13700k, etc...
Just for "fresher" system :)

Anyway... BIOS says Memory Controller Voltage... Im assuming thats reffering to the memory controller built in to the CPU... Not that actual RAM stick voltage. ?!?!
I could be wrong though.... Just makes sense to me...
