Random hangs on fairly new build

This is all really strange. Last night my PC was working fine and I left it encoding some films which I can see it encoded all of them fine right until completion, which was at about 7am.

My PC is hanging literally every minute or two, for no known reason. I tried to use the computer this morning and it was hanging, so I had to reset it. After trying to use Firefox, emails, etc, it would just hang for no obvious reason. Even if I left it for a minute it might be hanging when I return.

I've tried resetting the BIOS to defaults with no success.

Specs are:
Motherboard: Asus Z97 Pro Gamer
CPU: i5 4570
Memory: Teamgroup Vulcan Gold PC3-12800C9 16GB
Graphics: GTX 660
Audio: PCI X-fi Xtreme Audio

Even typing this on a laptop, the system is idle and just hanging constantly!

Looking like a memory fault to me.

Sorry if I came across as hot headed earlier. Various things going on and I had limited time to try and put the computer right!

Anyway I took one memory stick out and the computer seemed to stay in Windows for a minute longer, but still crashed. Thinking I was getting somewhere, I swapped the memory sticks round - thinking that I had taken the good stick out and left the bad stick in.

But after swapping the sticks round I just got some clicks from the PSU as though it was trying to power on and off. Ok, so if I swap the sticks round it'll at least be functional. But no, after swapping I am just getting clicking from the PSU/motherboard. Now the computer won't come on at all now.

Any help or pointers, I'm desperate now. :(

Ok, a new BIOS was released yesterday. I have 0501, but will update when I return home later - if I can get the computer to even POST.

Those with an Asus Z97 Pro Gamer:
Z97-PRO GAMER BIOS 2002
Enhance the compatibility with some CPU Fans
I didn't set XMP as I'm not entirely sure what it is. What is the minimum speed memory the CPU will run on? I might need to try another pair of memory sticks in my machine later, because it's looking more and more like the RAM to me.

I don't understand why it's been fine until now, encoded all night and onlly crashes when the system is idle.

XMP is what the motherboard reads to set up the RAM speed/timings/volts to what the RAM needs to run at its rated speed.

When I get back and get into the BIOS, the first thing I will do is enable XMP then update the BIOS. But for now I'm concentrating on getting into the BIOS. :(

Ok this is very strange!

Tried memory in slot A1 (closest to the CPU) - nothing. Tried the other memory stick in A1 machine posts.

Tried memory that didn't work in A1 in the B1 slot, machine posts.

So I've updated the BIOS with the stick in B1, enabled XMP profile and I am now running Memtest86 v4.3.7 from UBCD.

Had a similar issue with my laptop. Turned out one of the RAM sticks was US. Booted fine with S stick in both slots. Would not boot with US stick in either slot. Should have guessed it was faulty as it turned up in an already opened anti static box. (Not bought from OcUK).

Arranged an RMA with OcUK as they felt it could be the motherboard due to both memory sticks passing Memtest in the B1 slot. Later on I did have trouble with the working stick in the A1 slot, so looks like a dodgy slot or memory controller.

Everything is working as normal now, with both sticks of memory installed, the latest BIOS installed and XMP enabled. :)

Thanks OcUK and the Haribo was a nice little bonus!

I agreed to buy the same motherboard and arrange for a refund on the old one when OcUK get it back. So when the motherboard was collected, I was passed a new one at the same time.
