Every time I boot my PC it says it needs to install some hardware (and there are two Unknown Devices in Device Manager) but I don't have a clue what they are.

Everything is installed as far as I know

What do you mean?


I have installed chipset drivers... did that when I formatted around 8 months ago. This problem cropped up around a month ago or so, and nothing had been done to the system at that time

That might help. Also have you got a graphics card with two sockets on it? Mine has and I have to install two sets of drivers to get both sorted in the Device Manager.

In my experiance an unknown device can be a gameport on a soundcard (even if it dosent have one ) or quite offten its a motherboard "device" which is what the motherboard monitoring programs "tap into" to get your temps and stuff.

So for example if you've got an Asus board try installing AiBooster and see if it goes away..

Alright... I believe it is the ATI WDM part of my X1900XTX... but I have already installed the full drivers

Ah ha! So I was right. You haven't installed the drivers then. What you've installed are drivers for the main socket. You need to install seperate drivers for the WDM part of the card.

This caught me out with my X1800XT until I realised this.

http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/xp/radeonxip-xp.html There you have 3 packages. The first is the main display, you've installed this. Ignore the second.

The WDM is the third package. That's what you want.

Voltage, temp, rpm, ect;
I noticed a whileback that some hardware monitoring programs installed virtual hardware.

Ah sorry. Misunderstood you. Doubt that entry in Device Manager is the WDM bit of you graphics card then.

Right-click on the entry and see what info it says about the hardware. Any clue as to what it might be?

I tried that Halfdone thing, and it says the two unknown devices are to do with NTativrv01 which I believe is the WDM thing

What have you got plugged in your usb slots?

Open device manager and unplug every device you have. If it dissapears when you unplug something its an external device. If all devices have been unplugged then its something inside the pc.
