Random lock-ups

Been happening for weeks now, despite a format and re-install, latest drivers installed, latest BIOS installed etc.

The lock-ups are so random I can't find a common factor. For example, on Wednesday it locked the second I got into Windows. I rebooted and locked again, rebooted and same again. After the 3rd reboot it was fine until today. PC was running fine for a few hours after first switch on of the day, but now it's started locking again.

The screen just freezes, the mouse wont move, and if there was sound playing at the time, I get white noise out of the speakers (which is really bloody offensive), I'm left with no option but to hard reset. On a few of the locks I've got blue screens with random errors like non page fault, or bad usb driver.

After flashing the BIOS I left everything at default, so no overclocks or over-voltage, and my cooling is more than adequate.

Is there any kind of log file I can check in Win7 64 that might give me a clue as to what is going on?

Sounds like a memory or HDD failure to me. Is your HDD an oldy? I had lockups on my old system just before the HDD failed completely.
It could also be down to memory mind, have a run of MemTest, for log files, look here.

I suspected both mem and HDD.

I booted into memtest but it didn't do anything, just sat there saying "starting memtest.....ready", so I got annoyed and didn't bother again. Same with the Samsung Hutil, I tried to boot from the image I downloaded from Samsung, but it gave me an CDROM driver error and wouldn't load, so I got annoyed and didn't bother again.

I have patience shorter than a gnat's ****. :(
