random restarting without error logs?

Hi all,

I recently posted about having a restarting issue and believed it to be down to a specific error which I posted previously about (I thought it was faulty RAM). Althrough removing 2 sticks of ram seemed to work, it didn't.. it was mere co-incidence that it was fine for a few days as it is back.

I have had another look at the event viewer (considering that its not leaving any mini-dumps).. and I did manage to find something but I want your opinions?

Firstly, the computer restarts about 3-4 times without any prior notice when I first turn my computer on. This can be at any stage after I try and log-in, whether its half a second or 2 minutes later it happens... after 3-4 times, the computer seems to stabilise and not do it again...

- its started leaving a log called "Save Dump" which states

Code:
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x0000000a (0x81bf1ca8, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x804e972a). A full dump was not saved.

- 16-18 seconds earlier in the last 3 instances, I have also had a report for "redbook" which reads

Code:
This drive has not been shown to support digital audio playback.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

- 1 second before the "save dump" error, I also had "Tcpip" come up with this:

Code:
The system detected that network adapter MAC Bridge Miniport - Packet Scheduler Miniport was connected to the network, and has initiated normal operation over the network adapter.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Are any of these system logs related to the crashing and how can I fix it?

Thanks

Hi brennen

Firstly, I have run a mem test using a bootable CD, and after running a complete set it returned zero errors.

Secondly, I have tried taking 2 sticks of RAM out, still had the problem so I took the other 2 out, and placed the other 2 sticks in their original slots (i.e. I have checked both that the RAM is not at error, and that the slots are not faulty).

I have updated all the device drivers already using right click automatically update drivers on each and every driver on my device manager. I have also manually updated my graphics card driver by downloding it from the website tonight.

The only thing I have not done is a full checkdisk. I have run steps 1 to 4 already but did not have time to run the 5th one. I'm going to run a standard checkdisc in windows now (without /f /r) , but I wont get chance to run a full one until I leave my computer :-\

P.S. i also should note that on ONE instance a few days ago (this has only happened once), my computer hung on the very first screen (the P5N-D splash screen that allows you to enter setup). This has worked fine ever since through.

Hang on, running a quick checkdisk has just returned a error.. says

Deleting index entry in im_msn[1].gif in index $I30 of file 202183
Deleting index entry in IM_MSN~1.GIF in index $I30 of file 202183

Errors found. CHKDSK cannot continue in read only mode.

Is this likely to be causing restarts without BSOD?

quick update - just got back up from a nap whilst letting my comp do a full check disk... I found it back on the "P5N-D Splash screen" So restarted it again and got back to windows... and it said check disk complete.

Just got back into windows and done a in-windows check disk and got a SHED LOAD of deleting index entry's... think im going to have to run another checkdisk again.. cant check disk quarantine damaged areas of the drive?

also running HD tune now as you requested

okay, getting more and more fustrating!

I did a full check disk on windows start up, took about 2 hours and then said "No Errors, volume is clean".

Back in windows and run a quick read only one and its deleteing lods of index entries again???

Really dont understand why its finding errors in windows but not when it loads before windows?

cool, well ive copied and pasted health tab... anything look suspicious??

P.S. Since I ran those check disks (I ran about 20 of them in windows as it kept finding index entries etc..) I have noticed a decrease in random restarts.. Just wondering whether its co-incidence or its isolated the cause.. who knows..

Quick update a week or 2 on and still had no other issues... its disappeared like a ghost. Maybe the lumps of check disks did some good!!? Anyway thought it would be good to note for anyone with a similar issue, seems to have been a fix for me (even if its only a temporary fix before my drive totally dies), but a fix neverless.

Thanks for the help everyone
