Hey guys,

A mate recently reported that his trusty amd pc (2400xp) had suddenly, in the last moth or so, decided to restart itself at regular intervals.

I went round, had a quick look and advised him (not wanting to make too much work for myself) to get some new ram and a new psu - the one he had in there was about 8 years old and had come free with his case. I also ran the usual reg utilities and defragged the hd etc.

Unfortunately the problem is still persisting... I said I'd reinstall windows for him next week, but in the mean time, is there anything else I've overlooked? I also considered it being an overheating issue but I've ruled that out now; his chip hardly ever goes over 45 degrees.

Any thoughts?

Virus?
Try a system restore or something, if you restore it to a date before the problem was happening then you could determine whether or not it is a software or hardware issue.

Have you tried stressing the CPU? This happened to my old P4 when I stressed the CPU by doing some music encoding or too many programmes running at once.

Measure the temperatures of the CPU while its being stressed with a programme like prime.
