A friend of mine is having problems with his system. Specs are as follows -
Athlon XP 2600+ Socket A (not sure)
Asus A7V8X
512mb RAM
PNY GeForce 6600GT AGP
He's been having random shut downs for a while now. Just generally browsing and it will go, particularly when watching videos/playing games. I bought him a new PSU but things are still the same. Running ATiTool with the furry cube it artifacts badly however there's no shutdown. Orthos Small FFT's and Blend doesn't cause a shut down either. Any idea what could be going on?

I was having a shutdown problem there too, would be playing a game then...poof! had a look at coretemp, turns out it was the CPU overheating and auto-shutdown (yes it was that hot!). Had a look inside the case; couldnt see the HSF fins for the dust! Gave it and the graphics card a good cleaning, temps down 20 degrees idle (CPU and GPU!!) and no crashes since! If he hasnt cleaned it in a while (or ever!) id recommend it!

Same as above, install motherboard monitor and have a look at temps. Got to say artifacts in Atitool don't sound good though, how are games?

Gave it a good clean, it's the fact that it can last Orthos Blend and Small FFT's without crashing. Whether it be idle or load it still shuts down.

If it can survive the stress tests it sounds like the components are ok, might be a mobo problem. The last socket a I built was ~6ish years ago, it could well be on its last legs :( See if you can check the mobo temps as above. You never know...
