Random Shutdown problem

Typically this has to happen whilst I'm away and when my wife needs the computer most but it seems to have developed a problem that causes it to shutdown randomly.

There are two types of occurrence.

1. During normal usage, the screen will simply go blank and show no signal received. The PC seems to be still functioning - all fans are going and keyboard etc lights are on. Holding the on/off button does nothing and the only thing that can be done is to switch the thing off at the wall. It won't then POST when you switch it back on. However, re-seating the RAM generally seems to eventually do the trick.

2. Again during normal usage, the PC will randomly restart first taking to a screen saying something about a power surge. It will then start up as normal.

Number 2 son is at home and has performed a few perfunctory tests. Memtest+ comes up blank. Stripping everything out and adding components back one at a time makes no difference. So I'm guessing either motherboard or PSU. Preferably the latter.

This is a really awkward time for this to have happened insofar as I won't be home to sort anything for quite a few weeks so any suggestions greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Sounds very much like the power supply. Motherboard issues usually result in no working pc at all rather than intermittent problems

Sounds like PSU, Memtest doesnt always show faults with ram as i have had faulty ram pass the tests.
Whats temps like? could also be a thermal cut off perhaps?
