Random spikes on my GPU whilst browsing the internet

Hi guys.

I'm just starting to notice some strange goings on lately. Every now and again my monitor goes black then after a a second it flashes back on.

And also, looking at MSI AB, I'm getting 90% gpu1 usage at random spikes although im not doing anything.

This was a 2 minute spell whilst typing this message.

Any ideas?

Sorry but I can only properly comment on the spikes. A lot of people get them, and so do I - they don't seem to affect anything other than what the Afterburner graph looks like.

Unfortunately I haven't any specific knowledge of your other issue, so I can only suggest generic troubleshooting steps. Try reinstalling drivers, monitoring temperatures, checking Event Logger for things like AMD driver crashes, and checking device manager for hardware conflicts. Also try and identify what has changed on your system before the black flashes began (i.e. did you install new software or hardware?). Also I would try seeing if only one of your cards is causing the problem (by taking the other card out for a while).

All I can think of is maybe something flash player based doing it with hardware acceleration on. But with the tabs you have open that shouldn't really be the case. It is weird.

I've spent a day doing all the usual things, reinstalling drivers, using one card etc but the problem isn't going away. I read another thread on here regarding a similar problem regarding the spikes, but I don't seem to have the service running which is to do with bitcoining or something along those lines.

The strange thing is, all my games now have a constant stutter to them, they are not smooth moving which has never happened before. It doesn't affect the game, it doesn't stop or anything like that, but I can tell the fluidity of my games is not the same as it was a few days ago. Deinitely have something crappy going on and its bugging the hell out of me.

I have an I7 3770K and Windows 8.1 coming on Monday in the post, so will hold off doing a reinstall until then.

Hmm. Well with the Bitcoin thing, you'd see constant high usage rather than instantaneous spikes. Are you seeing these random spikes in AB during gaming as well? I personally get these spikes only at idle/browsing, with no corresponding CPU spikes, temp spikes, DPC spikes, or any other strange behaviour, and I know some other people get them too. They could be unrelated to the problems you're having, but then again perhaps not given your issues.

Presumably you've run virus scans, and checked your running processes?

Hi guys, sorry for the delay, I needed my pit after last reply.

I'm using eset NOD6 smart security, fully up to date. Ran scans and malware scans which turned up nothing.

Yes the spikes are only whilst browsing and I do use ie sometimes so maybe that's why I was seeing those spikes.

The concerning thing for me was the screen going black for a second then flashing back on. And the weird fluidity in games, had constant 60fps but the screen frame movement looked weird. Kinda looked stuttery but this has not been the case for the previous 2 weeks after I started running crossfire.

Like I said, I have more goodies coming in the post tomorrow, I'm going to dual boot with windows 8.1 so I'll see what things arelike after a fresh install.

A side question, will my 7950s be capable of using d3d 11.2?

Yeah, hopefully fresh install yields some results. AMD stated that the GCN cards will get dx 11.2 after a driver update. As it currently stands, it seems the 7000 series have hardware support up to 11.1, and will have tier 2 support for 11.2 (software), while the newer cards will have tier 1 support for 11.2 (hardware). Don't remember where the source is, sorry - I think it was an AMD rep on a tech forum who said this.

Perfectly normal Tony, i see it as well.

The spikes seem normal to me, but surely not the performance and black screen issues?

Tony did you update the HIS Ice-Q bios to the latest one that we're all using? If not do it and see if that fixes the problem. :)

New bios for testing:

925/1250MHz Non Boost 1.175v -INCREASED TDP FROM 130W TO 173W-CrossFire users-ulps can now remain enabled with no performance loss!!!

This is a new bios that Matt and myself have been testing, further feedback welcome-especially if you are running CrossFire.

Matt's found you can overclock further before you need the power limit.

My own testing has achieved slightly lower voltage for my 24/7 clocks:

Before-1100/[email protected] +30% Power Limit

Using this bios-1100/[email protected] no Power Limit adjustment required.

Thank you guys. Sorry bit slow today keeping up with things, got a killer migraine.

I have not tried that bios Matt, I will do this afternoon though. Think I'm going to revert back to a previous 13.11 beta driver I was using also, could well be an issue with the beta 6 cats and my setup.

Thx again

update

Just Uninstalled all drivers and MSI AB, reflashed the IceQ with that latest Bios from your recommendation Matt, just reinstalled 13.11 beta1 and the new MSI AB beta 16.....no monitor going black for a second and no strange looking stuttering in my games :) I have a feeling it was the 13.11 beta6 that did it, but I'm just going to leave it where it is at the moment.

New bios is interesting, just ran Heaven and Valley @ 1100/1550 with no +20 power and 1.180v got through both tests and my games haven't locked up either :)

I think it was the old bios. ;)

The beauty of this new bios is you can run overclocks without the need for power limit. You can run overclocks with ULPS enabled now. ;)

Should be good for 1100/1500 @1.175v-1.2v with power limit at 0% and no throttling in sight. Anything over that and you might need the power limit increased.

Hot diggidy damn!

happy days Matt, just actually scored 3521 as well on Valley which is better than my previous best and scored 1805 on Heaven which again is better than my previous. I like this, I have the OC bug lmao. Might be edging that core up bit by bit this evening lol.

I also have my 3770K and Windows 8.1 in the post tomorrow Matt so going to be firing on all cyclinders just in time for BF4 muhahaha. I might check out the Beta6 as well, if I get the probs again, I know for sure its those new drivers.

One interesting thing, my GPU is not spiking during web browsing on IE now either
