Whilst playing some videos, whether it's streaming, DVD or playback from a file on my pc, I get random stuttering of video & audio for a split second.

It's the same effect you get when I turn my pc off with a video still playing, I'm sure other people will know what I mean.

I'm using the same codecs I've always used, I don't know what else to look at!

Check for large amounts of drive access during these stutters.
Also, try fiddling with the accerlation settings in the sound control panel.

Does the sound just drop out, or does it loop (stuck CD player effect)?

"Stuttering" is the best description I could think of, could be looping but it's so short I can't tell. I can't check for the drive access because it's come and gone in a second :(

Sounds like a buffering problem of some kind.

Is it regular, does it always start after a certain amount of time?

Check for background processes that maybe spiking the CPU as well, but that's not a very likely cause.

It's not regular, occurs at different times with different programs and processes running. The only thing I could think of is a problem with the realtek audio gubbins that came with the board, so I've shut those processes off temporarily to see if it has an effect :)

Problem went away for a couple of days (or I just didn't notice it) but it's still happening.

I've looked around and can't find anything to help :(

could be a process running in the background, anti-v updating or something, next time you get the stuttering open up task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and select the processs tab, then click on CPU column twice so processes using the cpu the most are at the top, see if anything is running in the background

It's not happening long enough for me to be able to catch it!

However, I've run Orthos and apparently my CPU o/c is slightly unstable so I'm going to put it down to that and try to stabilise it :)
