This is something I've had before but I was forced to restore a ghost image recently and now the crashes are quite regular and I can't see any sort of pattern. Basically, either the PC resets completely, or it freezes and has to be turned off and on again.

There are no obvious errors in the event log apart from this: -

'The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk4\D.'

This drive isn't really used for anything - is there any way that this could cause the issue, even though I don't access the drive?

Are there any other diagnostics utilities I could use to attempt to determine the problem?

Any help gratefully appreciated...

My first thoughts were dodgy ram. But then you mentioned the harddisk controller error so I'd make sure all the connections to the drive are ok and pushed home firmly. If they are, can you disconnect the drive and run the PC without it for a few hours?

I'd still be tempted to check your ram too....memcheck is very good and will pick up on any problems pretty quickly.
