Hi guys,

As above, a friend is having issues with connectivity around her Victorian town house - solid walls and lots of floors etc. They've tried different routers and they've got one set of antique powerline adaptors. What I want to know is, is do you think it would be better to ditch the old powerline's and a get a wifi extender or get one of these wifi/powerline kits or what?

Her lads are the ones who would use it the most I'd imagine; smartphones/gaming/ipads etc, so I'm thinking wireless might be the best option - maybe also keeping the powerlines? They go to a dedicated office machine.

I'd be interested to hear your thoughts :)

I've heard of real issues with the "extender" devices, if it's for low bandwidth/Internet use then I'd use the powerline adapters to link to a new proper wireless access point.

This is future proof to some degree - if running a cable becomes feasible in the future, then the access point can be used with it.

Powerlines have issues to, ie anti surge sockets etc and also with extensions, also they are best on same electrical ring circuit, both Powerline and Wif-fi extenders have their pros and cons.

I did read a review and they found AC WiFi extenders to be faster then Powerline, see if I can dig it up.

End of the day personal preference really and a lot depends on your house/wiring/walls/location etc, so lots of unknown factors on which is best for you, personally get one that has both, more expensive but covers you in any situation.

I had nothing but problems with my powerline set (new-build house so should have had the best chance) - I have been very impressed by my new Wireless AC setup - fast and good signal strength.
