It's coming up time to swap the X5 and having flirted with a panamera we have decided whilst it's a brilliant car it just isn't practical for us. We are going to go one car and have 2 dogs and 2 kids. On balance my wife likes a high driving position and if I'm honest we are both badge snobs to some degree. We don't do a lot of miles and both like a decent engine and a nice cabin. Petrol is an option as we do less than 10k per year.

The X5 has been brilliant (panoramic roof, 7 seats, quick enough) but is my 3rd BMW in a row so tempted by a change.

I am drawn to a Range Rover but the budget (company allowance and as I am a Partner in an LLP there is no BIC) can't stretch to the new model and would more likely be a circa 2012 car.

With the new one out do people think that is a terrible choice?

I see other options as new model X5, Cayenne, Range Rover Sport I guess, ML or GL (but wife has an anti-Mercedes thing as her family all drive them and she thinks if we have a better one they will all get butt hurt - I was tempted by CLS estate but mrs not biting)

Thoughts? Seems the Range Rovers that are approx 3 years old have depreciated so much you get an awful lot of car for the money.

Taking into account you're a badge snob, want to try something that isn't BMW, Mercedes out of the question and Range Rover is too expensive. Have you considered Audi?

Not a fan of them really so have never tested one. I know they are probably great but there's just something about the Q7 I don't like. Looks like an overweight estate.

Sorry pal I can't think of a better reason TO get a merc then:D

Plus those new ML/GL are really nice.

Although sat in a nice Range rover above everybody else is special too

I love mine (although it's a Sport) and can't think of another car I'd rather own other than the FF. Capable everywhere all the time. Mine has been completely reliable in two years, apart from an issue on the very first day which was down to a bad mechanic not attaching a hose. Funnily enough I was just chatting to the guy that owns our office building about them and he has 225K miles on his 2010 FFRR and hasn't had an issue either.

They aren't for those that like to drive enthusiastically though - they are wafty, relaxed and cosseting!

I know!

Sounds ideal. I like to be able to accelerate well but neither of us have pretensions to being massive drivers.

I love my Sport. If you pick up a MY13, the last of the old shape, you will get the most problem free version with loads of kit and as far as I know they took a bit of a hit price wise with the new model coming out.

The only downside is that you need to be able to put up with the image/stereotypes that people will put on you....and don't expect to be let out of many junctions!

Albeit a few years older than what you are looking at, but I've been spending some time in GLs/MLs/FFRR and other premium SUVs deciding on my next one.

Personally the FFRR is by a long chalk the best one to be in. It's reminds of my old Merc CL in terms of luxury but with amazing capability off road and huge waftiness on it. More so than the other marques.

The main reasons I guess not to get a previous gen model is while they've depreciated a lot they aren't going to stop doing so any time soon. If you can cope with that I think you'll be very happy in one.

seems like 2011 and may be 12 RR can be had for around £35k or thereabouts with nice specs and not mega mileage

If you don't buy from the approved used programme can you add a warranty like the BMW one? Any experience with it if so?

I have nothing useful i can really add here other than that we absoliutely love our Range Rover, and would struggle to ever replace it with anything other than another Range Rover. So i say go for it :)

Ours (mine) has been 100% reliable too, ive done nothing to it at all other than replace the tailgate gas struts (the tailgate is very heavy which causes the struts to leak far quicker than most cars).
