[Rant] Do red lights not apply for horses?

my friend who has had a horse did this once, it was very a funny story, details were sketchy and subject to future emblishment but it sure did happen, the horse later developed a hoof infection and now runs in the grand national (which I've won and also later raced in)

nay nay

Not being funny here, but, just like tractor drivers, why do horse riders only seem to come out on the road during rush hour when they KNOW drivers are at their least patient and traffic is at it's busiest?

if it was a group of army horses then they go by the rule of marching troops ie the first one obeys the rules and the others follow - if the lights turn red when the first one has already crossed then the others still follow - like a really long truck.

I was in the room when my mum was watching one of those cop shows, I think it was one of the older re-runs but a statistic I overheard eluded to a substantial amount more of cyclists were killed on the roads than motorcyclists. I can't cite anything, but it does give you a perspective of things. Its easy to think bikers are the easy pickings of road death statistics when in fact if you think about it, its could quite easily be cyclists. As a side note, everybody and their dog seems to be cycling these days.

For the record I've seen a horse spooked by a car before and it wasn't pretty for the car or the horse so I give them plenty of room and space, but to go back to my OP there's being considerate for fellow road users and then there's taking the mick.

Oh of course. I do my best at all times to be considerate and know my place on the road. Right of way is everything and disobeying this is where lives end. Its easy to get carried away though and because cyclists & horse riders are a minority on the roads, when they do make mistakes they tend to stand out. People forget we're all in the same boat no matter the transport and there's nothing to stop us all sharing the same road safely. The attitude at the moment seems be that the car is king and nothing else should be near the road.

That said, cyclists who ride two abreast and don't even care to move when a vehicle is clearly coming or behind them should be shot on sight. Totally selfish and unnecessary. I can understand anyone's hatred towards cyclists after following them for a good deal of time.

I think the rather large and obvious difference between a horse and a bicycle stopping at a red light, is that one will stop when pulling a handle, and the other will only stop if its in a good mood :P

Generalisation obviously, I'd imagine horses are not taken on roads unless their riders deem them capable of handling the general traffic moving around them.

I used to cycle to school and nearly been hit a fair few times.

I wish horses weren't allowed on the road unless the rider attached a bucket to the backside of the horse. Sick of the riders thinking they can just let them **** everywhere it's just a mess.

I cycle through the centre of Manchester and always take advantage of crossing junction in-between light cycles. So long as you are careful and don't take the pee and obviously go slow and watch out for people crossing its fine and a damn sight safer than setting off surrounded by buses!

but it makes car drivers rage that your beating them on a bike :(

There is a Qatar state visit to the Queen in Windsor this week, there are signs everywhere. This was probably a test run for the procession or something. Windsor is a bit of a special case, being where the Queen lives - you sometimes have to put up with things like this. Royalty > road laws.

Yeah I saw the signs over the weekend warning of delays for the practice run, didn't realise it was on today as the traffic was quite nasty!

Trust me mate, as a car driver I hate cyclists/horses, but as a cyclist I hate cat drivers :p

Think there's a word for me...

Haters gonna hate.

I don't think horses or cyclists should be allowed on the road unless they too pay insurance and duty. I find it amazing that parks fine for dog owners not clearing up after their 'pet' yet horses can dump their innards all over the road with no reprisal.
