Behind you!
Ok this is a cross between a desperate plea for help and a rant. Basically I'm getting nowhere with this game... It's too darn complicated. Every key on the keyboard has a function... and so does every caps locked key!!!! Various parts of the manual that comes with the DVD are just plain wrong. That's more than a little annoying.

Can anyone tell me the secret to this game? (if there is one) where is the defiitive guide to the controls because the manual is worthless.

Any help greatly apprcieated.

Definitive guide doesnt realy exist, though you can manualy configure the controls if you wish. The X3 manual is a bit ropey on the controls, but a lot better than the X2 manual!

controls you will NEED (not caps btw):

J: SETA- speeds up time up to 10x if Singularity Engine Time Extension is instaled (recomended)
K: switches targeting modes- if Fight Command MKI is installed you can get "computer assisted aim"
T: target object in recticle
U: Activate autopilot, when targeting a ship it issues the "Follow" command, when targeting a station the "Dock" command
1/2/3/4: select weapon setups 1-4, configured by hilighting the 4 little blue bard next to the weapon required on the weapon loadout part of the HUD (left side)
right click: activates and deactivates mouse directed flight, when deactivated the mouse can be used to target, order and navigate the HUD.
WASD: strafe up/left/down/right
Enter: open ship menu, select highlighted menu option
,: open universe map
.: open sector map (might be other way around, cant remember of the top of my head)
L: launch missile
M: cycle missiles
Home/End: cycle targets

other than that, your joystick should auto-configure pretty well

Complicated, but you get used to it fast.

If you need any other hints, ive been playing X for a few years now, so i may be able to help :)

x3 is such a hard game to get in to, when i first started i got so frustrated i uninstalled it and left it for weeks.

But after a read Here i found the resolve to struggle on! :D

Have a lil read, it will help you no end, unlike the manual. :p

:)

Some of my questions have been answered (thank you!) but a couple remain:

How do you find out what your current mission objectives are... I know it tells you at the start of each mission, but I have a short memory... by the time I arrive somewhere I've forgotten what I'm Meant to do.

THe other problem is: powercells. Apparently I need powercells to use the jumpdrive... that would be fine if the game told me how to get them!!!!!

I realise solar stations sell power cells. But when the game asked me to make half a dozen jumps in a single mission I ran out.... not surprisingly.

How are you supposed to get more powercells with 0 cash. I hjave no min9ing tools and next to worthless weapons... aside from starting all over what do i do?!?!?!

It sounds like you have just done the second mission where you blow ships away in your turret? If so I would suggest you find a better ship to do the next mission where you are struggling at the moment.

Forget about the mission for now and get your free transport ship trading for you. Get exporing and find some free ships and sell some of them for cash. Find the tricky to get Mamba Raider and be able to kill most ships with some nimble flying skills.

To find where you are in the story game press enter, personal, messages and look back through them to find what you want.

Edit.

To get Energy Cells, fly to Ore belt or Power circle and fly to a solar power plant to buy them.

Jumpingmedic, i started by mostly using the enter key and then browsing through the options with the arrow keys. as you get as you get used to the menu, then you can start to use the shortcut keys and you'll know where they are taking you.
