I haven't been driving for a few years now, just didn't need a car and cycling's been good for my fitness but the time has come where work is requiring me to travel and I am shocked at insurance.

I'm 38, never had a conviction but have no current NCB either. Playing around with Aviva online quotes I got the following:

Volvo S60 T5SE (2.3 Petrol Turbo - 250BHP - Grp 16 Ins) ~ £1150
Renault Clio 1.5DCi (1.5 Diesel - 65BHP - Grp 4 Ins) ~ £900

How in the hell does anyone make sense of that? How on earth can a painfully slow Clio cost nearly as much to insure as a rocket like the Volvo? I was looking at 3.0 Jags, BMW's and Audi's but with the cost of fuel and insurance being as absurd as they are I just can't stomach the thought of it. I'd rather donate to charity than give all that money away.

A rocket lol? Ever driven an S60 T? (only joking btw)

Anyway - At a guess your age and number of years driving means that according to the model/stats you're of little risk of putting whatever you buy into the nearest hedge be it a ka or a ferrari but you have no demonstrable history and will have the "no claims bonus" in effect added on.....so they can take it back off later.

Give them a phone, see if they will give a year or two introductory bonus

Do more searching properly. Will take you half a day if you do it properly and ring about. Dont forget you local brokers to.

Aviva are awful quoted me £3300 at 20 1ncb 1.3 golf. Admiral came back at £960

Direct opposite here.

We've had an Admiral multicar policy with Admiral for 3 years now, renewal came through yesterday raising it from £900 to just over £1450

Got a quote from aviva for £880 and asked Admiral if they could be competitive (as we would like to stay with them ) and they were only able to knock it down to £1400

Girl on the phone was unable to say why the massive increase, but Aviva get our business this year..

Admiral do this every year hoping people will just accept the renewal. In future just do an online quote with a slight variation on your name and you'll find their competitive price. A quick phone call and they'll reduce to the online price. Wanted £950 for me on renewal, a quick check and call later it was around £500. Silly tactics and I dont honestly know why they do it as I imagine more people will just become thoroughly annoyed and go elsewhere than take the silly renewal price.

The issue with insurance it seems as others have said, your age and experience work for you meaning your quotes are not in the astronomical ranges that younger drivers get but because of the lack of NCB, the insurers have no claim history for you and their worry is partially not the cost of fixing the Clio but also what they may have to pay out in the event that you hit someone, who may be driving something much pricier than a Clio.

It's tough, all you can do is shop around to try get your premium lower. Best of luck.

Likewise. been with elehapnt for 8 years and then this year aviva is best quote followed by elehpant. Went with aviva.

Why are you just looking at Aviva? If i just looked at Aviva for my insurance i would be paying about £3500 for my insurance. Since i didn't and had a proper look around, i ended up paying £715 with Elephant.

i think the price of insurance depends on where you live as well. if you live in a urban environment then it is likely to be more expensive than it might be when one lives in say in the countryside.

Terrible drivers having lots of accidents in painfully slow Clios? It's mostly a statistics game... Mostly.

It makes you wonder!

I can insure an e39 M5 for pretty much what I currently insure my 528iSE for, despite it being worthless!

I can only guess more e39 528i's have been mangled than e39 M5's by drivers of my agegroup, perhaps?

Beats the **** out of me tbh!

Is the insurance industry price regulated at all? Or are they free to charge what they like to whoever they like?

its regulated by FSA and FOS. Most people only look at the costs on a one to one basis. An insurance company is charging for every single customer sharing same details. I would go on more however its the same stuff that would have been typed in to all the other "my price has gone up, someone is giving me a cheaper price" threads on here :)

Buy a Ford Ka, my missus works in insurance and when she and a male colleague were talking to the motor department they did a search for him as he wanted to get his daughter a car, the least nicked car in their system over the past years are Ford Ka's.........

To compare, with full no claims, my Clio 1.5dCi was £230 fully comp this year (in an F risk area, highest risk rating on the scale i was looking at)!
