Some of you may remember a while back (a while back being 16th march) i posted a thread saying someone had gone in the back of me and drove off...informed the police who said driver was uninsured.

Original Thread - http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17705648

Finally today i receive a letter from the police some 5months later saying they have been unable to trace the driver bla bla bla

I phoned them asked what was so damn difficult and said surely the owner should be in the firing line...to which they informed me there was a change of owner on 5th may...ok then...contact previous owner.

So anyway it seems this car that hit me was a ghost car, apparently they have no information on the vehicle previous to this change of ownership nor do the dvla....how the hell does this happen? surely the v5 must have info on? i was a bit worked up on the phone so didnt ask that many questions but im going to phone them again on Monday and ask some more questions. the police told me they contacted the new owner who has no info on the previous owner....this must be BS...surely they know were they bought the car from? V5 must have previous owner section?

Am i missing something here?

This just confirms my suspision that the police are a waste of time for all but the most severe cases eg murder, rape etc. Im also wondering why i do everything above board when the people who play the system get away scott free.

I was hit by a moped - who turned out wasnt insured and it was his mates bike!

Police have a name - but could they do anything with it? no!

Luckily my car was just panel damaged, so I put a new bumper/bonnet/wing on and sold it

Gave up chasing the police in the end - as well as the insurance company.

Infact, because of this - I don't even declare that accident! I don't see why I should!

same here, got the car repaired at a local garage cash in hand (£120) its just the principle of it..some scrote gets away with murder...meanwhile if i do 35 in a 30 the police are interested then

No they arent. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has got a ticket for doing 35mph in a 30mph zone. (Dont try to bluff).

What else do you want them to do? If there is no details held for that vehicle, what can be done despite asking the new owner where he bought it from?

no need to take things so litteraley (sp?). what i was trying to say is the police seem to care more about trivial things that are easy to "do you for".

surely a vehicles previous owners details dont just disapear of the system? surely the new owners know were they bought the car from...cant have just appeared on their drive one day as if by magic now can it?

Hmm, well, my uncle's a magistrate and he got done for 34 in a 30 so there you go and I've seen the NIP before you start shouting heresay!

Err, I got a NIP sent to me for doing 35mph in a 30 limit in Slough last year. Luckily they sent it too late and I was able to get off it but I know other colleagues have sent the NIP back for similar speeds and received points.

I posted a thread in bmwland at the time, and I may still have the original NIP upstairs, although we've moved house since then.

It really is sickening how little effort the Police put into minor crimes, it seems the petty criminals can just walk around doing pretty much anything they want, drive uninsured cars/bikes, steal, commit fraud, the police won't even bother unless one is daft enough to walk into a police station and hand himself in..

I handed in CCTV footage of someone vandalising my bike, they did nothing, even when given the name/address of the guy.. The same guy tried breaking into another car in this closed car park a week later, unfortunately for him it was one of the bouncers at the club I worked at, and they re-educated him on the spot.. Ludicrously he went to the police, and they demanded CCTV footage of the reprisal, which oddly seemed to have got lost, the police went to massive lengths to track down the CCTV footage and tried to prosecute 4 bouncers for GBH and perverting the course of justice, or something like that... Just because some plank got (a minor) slapping for breaking into someone car..

Also, When I gave them the name/address of a laptop ordered on my stolen debit last year, the bank and police just didn't want to know, I mean, how hard could it have been to deliver the parcel to the address and nab the recipient..

part of it's due to the fact they would only get a warning. That and they have to keep targets which means spending money on pen pushers to alter stats rather than fighting crime.

It's the same as most jobs these days. for ever hours work you do, you have to do about 4hrs of paperwork.

my uncle said the same about the police... he hates nicking anyone in the first couple of hours for petty things as it takes about 9 hours to fill out the paperwork after that. if he arrests about 10 people thats him done for paperwork for the week....

Surely go out, fight crime, and worry about the paperwork afterwards? I'm sorry but in every job theres paperwork

I managed to get a hit and run driver into court after badgering the Police for 4 months.

On the day of the trial they decided to drop the incident with my car and just do him for driving without licence, Tax, insurance and MOT.

He walked out of court with 3 points on a licence he hasn't got and a £300 fine which was dropped to £150 on the account of him being on benefits.

Two dfays later I spotted him driving another car. It is a total waste of time trying to get them done.

And I got 3 points in 2003 for doing 36 in a 30 zone. Still interested?
