Hi there,

I have a 3 year old WD raptor which is on the blink. I'd like to get data off the disk. I went to the PC yesterday and it was bluescreened, so rebooted and it failed to detect the HD. Restarted and it started booting into windows (wahay i thought) but then stopped at the loading screen and the HDD kept making a repetitive noise over and over.

Whats the best way to get data back - are there any tools or should I put it as a slave on another pc? Or should I try the old freezer trick?

Cheers,

Jonno.

The other cheaper alternative is to get hold of a Linux Live CD. Just Google it. Download the Live CD version of Ubuntu or MintLinux and use ImgBurn, or such like to burn the iso file to disc.

Boot from that. It boots you into a fully working Linux desktop without actually installng to a drive. From the Linux desktop you'll be able to access your Windows/Raptor drive and copy/cut/move files to a external drive or USB flash drive etc

If you have problems getting hold of a copy trust to myself ( and I'll dig you out one or burn a copy for you ) or try any of the regulars in the Linux software section of the forum

ATB :)

I've just booted to a Ubuntu 10.4 Live disc on my other machine, as we speak, (It has the Install on a WD 160Gb VRaptor) and I can access all the drives (3) from the Live desktop down to individual user(s) accounts etc

PS
This assumes that your drive has a bit of life left in it still?

I'm not sure if this will be of any help but I've head of people putting a dying HDD in the freezer (in a sealed bag of course) for a few hours, sometimes it just gives you enough life to get all the important data off it.

Never tried it myself but I've heard that it can work, worth a try :)
