Hi all

im extracting a Windows 7 ISO from a winrar archive.

it is taking ages, and CPU (Q6600 2.4) is hardly being touched at all.

Is there any way of making it use more of the CPU to get it done faster?

Cheers, Tom

Hmmm, maybe so!

Copied a lot of files from HDD to external HD earlier though, and CPU usage was sky high compared to at the moment, or is it just a different process

Extracting compressed files is not a CPU bound action, it is disk i/o bound.

If your OS isn't managing memory correctly then it's likely caching to the pagefile during extractiong and thus resulting in slow extraction.

Copying to an external USB HDD will use some CPU as this transfer passes the CPU.

I have just realised something a bit thick :(

Cue the laughter.

I managed to tell it to extract to a disc, not HDD. *insert expletives here*

appreciate the replies though!

Making a backup of Windows 7 from ISO > memory stick only takes around 10 minutes. Probably less than that. Ive got win 7 and all my drivers on a 4gb memory stick

Same here. Its a heck of a lot quicker now I've got a usb install. i'll slipstream SP1 when it comes out onto another usb
