Means it's not getting enough power if it just clicks.

Connect it up via a powered USB hub. Or just use network shares, that's how everyone else will be using their Pi to play things :)

I've been using Pi's in OpenElec for a couple of years, not once have I needed to SSH in to it..

Sudo just gives you super powers to change things and shoot lasers out of your eyes but since openelec auto grants this then just use the commands without the 'sudo'.

I use openelec and it mounts external hdd's automatically. I'd be surprised if it doesn't work fine once you get a powered usb hub.

I use my pi with open elec to stream media and it's working pretty well for that. I had it running as a wireless print server but the sd card failed and I haven't got round to setting it up again but it worked well in that role.

Wow thanks for taking the time to type all that really appreciate it

Well it sounds like it might not be needed - but still it's always good to learn something ;)

By the sounds of it if it is OpenELEC then automount or similar is already running making the whole thing a lot easier. I have use OpenELEC on my Pis for ages as well, but as bledd mentions I've never plugged in any drives directly either - always just have it pick up the NFS share from my server...

Will give setting up a network share a go tonight when I get in. Failing that I'll just get a powered USB hub. I did think having to SSH using putty was a bit overkill just to get it working.

Thanks for everyone's help so far:)

Right the guides I read said to plug USB drive into router, log in to router and enable file sharing/samba. My problem? My virgin super router (which is not so super it seems!) Doesn't have a USB port. I'm about to give up in frustration. Looks like I'm gonna have to try the powered usb hub. Why can't things just be simple?!

edit: would a USB Over Ethernet RJ45 adapter work?

edit 2: Sort of got a solution. Shared my external drive via Windows which is then picked up by OpenELEC as a network share. The wifi dongle I'm using means the speed isn't the best. This way does mean I'd have to have it plugged into my computer at all times to watch stuff on the Pi which isn't ideal.

Managed to get everything sorted. Ended up buying a powered usb hub and connecting my usb external drive to that instead. Did take me a while to work out where Kodi mounted the drive though (had to browse through the file system) but all sorted now.

Got an app for my phone that lets me navigate the menus which is really handy.

Yeah used a NAS before at work. Will have to see where I could store it if I got one. How is your network set up? Is your nas plugged directly into your router?

Easiest way to take a Pi case apart? Mine came pre-built but the micro sd card keeps catching on the case making it really hard to remove it.

Can you safely dremel that bit off?

Some cases clip in pretty tightly, should be able to just see how it's put together..

I could give the dremel a go. Probably needs 0.5mm taken off to stop it catching. It could be that the Pi isn't sitting in the case correctly.

I'll get some photos when I get home as I realise that each case might be different.

quick question what power plugs are you all using on your Pi2's?

Im fed up with borrowing my ipad charger.

I treated myself to one of those Anker multi-USB chargers, and combined my Pi power supply as a charging point for pads and phones (and Vitas and 3DSs etc etc). It has 6 USB ports each supporting up to 2.4A (I think), can run 4-5 at top amps at one time.

So I've programmed my new Apple remote to control Openelec. Just need to figure out how to tweak the Menu button.

I want hold Menu to bring up the 'Information' menu.

First impressions are good :), TV remote over CEC feels a bit too clunky for my liking.

For about 5 minutes I was having trouble with extra IR signals being sent to the GPIO reciever when I wasn't touching anything, turns out it was the lightbulb in my room! :p Once that was off, it programmed up nicely :) Works fine after programming when the light is back on.

Just added an Apple Remote to mine, as above.

Looked nicer than many of the cheap ebay offerings.

Once I look into getting the hold feature working, I'll post a guide.

edit.
Considered these options..
