Raspberry Pi 4b and external usb hdd question

Is it more likely that the Pi isnt liking an SSD drive or the USB case it's connected to?

I've got 2x USB 3.0 orico 2.5" drive enclosures they are different models but essentially the same thing.

my pi 4 works fine with a 1TB hybrid drive, it will boot from it as well.

it doesn't like the second one that houses a 240GB SSD.

what's more likely to be the issue here?

I get extremely slow read/write speeds on the SSD and it will not boot from the drive.

Have you tried swapping the drives between the enclosures to see whether the problem follows the drive or enclosure?

My guess would be the enclosure.

no, not yet... feeling lazy but I guess I won't know for sure unless I do

I thought id ask as I know the pi doesn't like dodgey sd cards so I thought it might have issues with certain ssd drives also (not that its dodgey... its a kingston from memory)

it was the SSD
tried it in 3 enclosures and it wasn't having any of it.
