I am looking for a mini PC to act as a media server (possibly using Plex or Kodi, but open to suggestions).

More specifically, it will be used to back-up and stream family photos / videos, stream 4K movies and potentially live TV if I can find a decent IPTV addon.

I purchased a Raspberry Pi 5 for my home automation which is working great, and so I purchased another to use as a media server, but I am now wondering if the N100 would have been a better choice.

I’d appreciate your advice.

I got a hp elite desk 800 and popped unraid on it. Been working fantastic, though not as small factor as the examples above.

I did consider the N100 but the pi isn't much use it you want to use hardware encoding (Intel is far superior in this regard)

the dell optiplex mss might also work. been looking at these decently with the HP Elitedesk
good solid machines at a reasonable price.
my only concern is the stock will stop soon, as most offices now transition to laptops, were as pre-covered there were a lot of desktops still in unse.

How is that coping with AV1 decodes though? I tried throwing one through mine the other day and every coer hit 100%, sadly the 8th gen Intel stuff is beginning to show it's age now.

N100 would be ideal, stick something on it that can cope with docker and run something like tvheadend with a tuner card and you're away.

I'd recommend using picoreplayer on Pi. Brilliant music server. With Material Skin plugin and app.

Very rarely use decoding, so not noticed. Most of my use case is on the TV. Also don't pay for Plex pass so don't get the advantage of hardware decoding.

Thank you all.

I cancelled my secondary Pi 5 order and have ordered a Beelink S12 Pro instead. I’ll let you know how I get on.
