Raspberry Pi XMBC question...

I have officially given up on Openelec - it used to run fine on my Pi but recently it has been freezing, crashing and just annoying the pants off of me!

So anyway, I decided last night to give RaspBMC a go. I was really pleased to see just how easy it is to install to USB rather than just SD and it scanned my library in a fraction of the time it used to take Openelec, plus the menu interface seems to be quicker. So far so good... except when it comes to my remote control :(

I have a Hama MCE Remote Control, which has always worked straight out of the box with Openelec, but I can't seem to get it configured correctly in RaspBMC - there are just a few key buttons which don't seem to be mapped correctly!

Any help or advice greatly appreciated :)

Setup your media on NFS shares and connect to them using this method. Having a shared DB network location makes it even smoother.

I found OpenElec to be by far the best of 3 I tried.

Yes SD for OS and 32GB USB 3 stick for data etc. I know next to nothing about SSH and all the guides for setting up Openelec to USB assumed you knew SSH - RaspBMC guides you through the install process and does it all for you.

My media library is all stored on a DLink NAS drive.

I'm using a 2.1 amp Generic Power Supply but I have an inline power switch in the USB cable - to save me from unplugging too often!

I just added a single text file to the SD card on my Windows pc, which tells it to use the USB for data.. Mine is an 8GB usb stick, plenty big for the fanart etc

Really! What build are you using, 4.2.1?

The only guides I could find on installing to USB all talk about SSH. Example here!

I did YouTube searches and everything!!!

<EDIT> I know a 32GB stick is overkill for the fanart etc. but I had it spare!

That guide looks quite old. Surely it's possible to just use something like Win32DiskImager to extract the image to the SD card and then edit the cmdline.txt using notepad?

I have another Pi which I'm setting up in the bedroom and I would like to share the library info i.e. shows which films are watched etc. on each. Do you know how I could do that?
 
I was hoping for a solution without having to buy a new NAS. I'm quite happy with the DLink - plus the Synology looks a bit steep price wise!
 
It's a DLink DNS320L and after a quick Google search it does support MySQL. Looks a pain in the rear to setup though!
 
Just looking that up now. Seems it does, but I probably don't have it configured!

I need to use the next week off work wisely and finally get this thing configured correctly :)

Yeah, I use that too. But I prefer my proper remote when I'm slumped on the sofa. Yatse is great for organising your movies and chosing mucis to lay etc.

Finally got it all figured and setup - it was really easy once I got my head around it. A lot of the guides out there are over complicated... maybe I should write a small guide?
 
I'm back on Openelec Kodi, and I have to say it's working like a dream... much better than RaspBMC :)
